Rebuilding, Recall & Searches

I was on-site two weeks ago where the new Havelock, NS Wesleyan Church is under construction.  Pastor Peter Hayes gave me the tour and the up-date on the church’s progress.  The building sits on a small hill and it stands out as you drive down the road.  It is generating a lot of positive interest in the community as well as in the congregation.  The building is closed in, the roof is shingled, and the carport over the main entrance has been attached and shingled.  The church recently received $15,000 from an estate which will pay for the sanctuary chairs.  The congregation had a goal of raising $10,000 for the sheetrock (1000 sheets at $10 each) and achieved their goal this past weekend.  Everything they have done to date has been accomplished without borrowed funds.  PTL!  They are currently waiting on the tenders for the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing.  Tenders close this Wednesday.  Pastor Peter says they hope to be in the building sometime in June.  A dedication date for the building is still to be determined.

Pastoral Recall Votes: In the last two weeks, several of our churches have conducted pastoral recall votes.  In addition to what was reported in the last Under Sail (Westchester, NS; Black’s Harbour, NB), seven of our pastors received strong votes – Stuart Marples, Mount Pearl, NL – Solid Rock (unanimous); Jacob Ebbett, Havelock, NB; Nick Graham, Maple Ridge, NB; Matt Maxwell, Fredericton, NB – First; Rob McDowell, Easton, ME; Glen McVicar, Lower Brighton, NB.

Resignations: Ben Medel resigned from the Shelburne, NS Wesleyan Church yesterday.

Pastoral Searches: The following churches are currently in pastoral transition and seeking God’s direction as they look for the person who will serve as their next pastor:  Fredericton – Crosspoint; Scarborough, ME – Coastal Community; Shelburne – Hope.  I have had initial meetings with the local boards and search committees at Fredericton-Crosspoint and Scarborough Coastal.  I will be meeting with the Shelburne LBA in the near future.  This is one of the single most important decisions a church makes, so please pray that these congregations will have God’s discernment and direction.  Pray also that the persons who will serve these congregations will have their hearts prepared, and God’s peace as they are directed to take up a new responsibility.

Dr. L.D. Buckingham, Lead Pastor at Moncton Wesleyan, preached a message on baptism yesterday from their church’s baptistry!  There were seven people who were already set to be baptized in that service, and they were.  At the close of the service, Pastor B. gave an invitation for others who would like to be baptized to come forward.  Six people spontaneously responded, and they were baptized in response to the invitation – a total of thirteen baptisms!  This is what it’s all about – changed lives!

Pastor Rich and Katie Thomas serve at Jonesport Wesleyan in Maine, and have been there for seven years this summer. There were 50 people in the service (lya 48) on March 4th when I visited this congregation.   Pastor Rich has received his green card within the last 2-3 weeks, and that has been a major cause for celebration!  A church potluck was held in the basement fellowship hall, and a special cake was presented to the pastor in honor of his green card finally being received.  The church has taken positive steps to connect with their community and make a difference.  The church’s clothing bank, which was started by Pastor Rich, has become a major outreach opportunity into the community.  Also, Harry & JoAnne Bishop, members of the congregation, started a food bank which is also helping the church’s efforts to connect to the community.  The Bishops drive 90 minutes one-way to Brewer, ME every week and pick up day-old bread from a local bakery.  They bring it back to Jonesport and then distribute it the next day to 30 different locations around the area.  This is an effort with serious commitment!

This past Sunday, I was at Kentville – New Hope Wesleyan in Nova Scotia.  They have two Sunday morning services.  The first one “took a hit” because of the time change, but it was a good service.  There were 167 people in church between the two services (lya 164).  I brought greetings on behalf of the District, and Pastor Scott Prime continued with the next message in their Restore series.  Several people responded to the invitation, and two people gave their lives to Christ!  I enjoyed interacting with the people in the lobby in between services.  One man told me how he started coming to New  Hope, and loved it!  He told a friend where he was going to church.  He invited this friend to come but didn’t think he would.  He showed up the next Sunday…and the next…and the next!  In less than a year he’d given his life to Christ.  The gentleman told me it was a real joy to see his friend baptized!

Some through the waters, some through the flood…
One year ago (March 22, 2011), we lost a church to a fire, and this year (March 23, 2012) we have a church that has been devastated by a flood.  The community of Perth-Andover, NB has experienced $25 million dollars worth of damage overall, and about 150 properties in the town have sustained significant damage.  This is the result of unusually warm temperatures triggering an early spring thaw, and then ice jams in the Saint John River causing severe flooding.  The Perth-Andover Wesleyan Church sits in the flood plain, and consequently the basement of the church was flooded.  It’s a mess!  I spoke with Pastor Reg Thomas yesterday.  “Everybody is taking care of everybody,” is what he says.  People are returning to their homes.  They have gotten in the church, and have completed Stage 1 of the clean up, which is “cart out the muck and the junk.”  The next step will be to rip out the dry wall, and then Step 3 is to wash it all down.  Many of you have asked how you can help…people and churches are ready to volunteer time and teams.  However, Pastor Reg says this has to be a controlled and strategic clean up.  Too many people on-site would actually complicate the process.  There are more than enough people on the ground now, coordinating efforts with the professionals and the town.  If you really want to help – take offerings, send money! The church does not have flood insurance because of where it sits, so this will be an added financial burden to the congregation.   If you really want to help, did I mention – take offerings, send money?!! The church will be holding a service in the Cavalry Tabernacle Pentecostal Church at 2 P.M. this Sunday.  Please keep Pastors Reg Thomas and Evan Oxner and the congregation in your prayers.

Halifax – Deep Water baptized 9 people on March 18th, and had 295 in church!  This past Sunday was their highest non-special event Sunday attendance ever with 328!  AJ Thomas is the pastor.

It has been eight months since the Millville congregation joined Maple Ridge Wesleyan, and it is working well.  There is a good melding of the two congregations.  I was in Maple Ridge this past Sunday.  There were 139 people in church (lya 76) this past Sunday, and that number is down!  There is a spirit of expectancy in the people, and there is energy in the service.  Good things are happening.  Pastor Nick Graham will be baptizing seven people on Easter Sunday morning!

Pastors and Churches:
Black’s Harbour –
Mark McCluskey received a unanimous vote on March 4th to serve as the pastor in Black’s and has accepted the call.
Moncton - Tim Guptill received a 98% favorable vote on March 18th to serve as the Lead Pastor Elect in Moncton, and has accepted.  He will take up his new responsibilities in Moncton in July.  Lead Pastor Buckingham will continue to serve through June 2014.
Fredericton-Crosspoint – The church’s LBA has recommended to the congregation that Assistant Pastors Mark Brewer and Conard Symonds serve as Co-Lead Pastors at Crosspoint.  This will be a two-year arrangement that will allow Pastor Conard, over that period of time, to decrease his level of responsibility while Pastor Mark’s responsibilities increase.  The pastoral vote will take place on April 1st.
Scarborough – Coastal Community – The Search Committee has interviewed potential candidates by telephone and SKYPE.  The LBA is recommending Dave Ziglar as the next Lead Pastor for CCWC.  He will be on-site the last weekend of April, and the members will conduct a vote that weekend.
Shelburne – Hope Wesleyan – I met with their LBA this past Tuesday evening.  The pastoral search process is underway.

Cheryl Hudson, wife of Rev. Gene Hudson, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 18th, which also happened to be her 73rd birthday.  The Hudsons are retired Wesleyan missionaries who served in what is now Zimbabwe, pastored churches on the Atlantic District, and also served in Australia.  The funeral service was held at the Belvedere Funeral Home in Charlottetown, PEI on Wednesday, March 21st.  There were 20 present from the Atlantic District ministerial ranks, and also lay people from across the District who have known the Hudson family across the years.  Please keep Gene and the Hudson family in your prayers.

Beulah Camp 2012 is set for July 6-15.  Pastors Steve Wilson and Larry Wilson are the special speakers; Scott & Elizabeth Rhyno are the worship leaders and will coordinate our music; EXALT will be returning – it’s the 10th anniversary of this Choir; the Webb Family will be joining us for a service mid-week; ministries for children and teens will be happening through the week; other special events will be taking place as well.  Check it out on the Beulah website which has been re-tooled, and is now up and running – http://www.beulahcamp.com

Amy Vail, who attends Sussex Wesleyan, is one of the Caton’s teens who went with Caton’s Director, Dean Stephenson, to Haiti right after Christmas to help run a children’s camp.  She entered one of her Haiti pictures in a Face Book contest and won $5000!  She is donating the entire amount to the Okipe Project for the new Village.  She is excited to do this.  She has a powerful testimony of how God has changed her life as a result of her going to Haiti.  Amy’s donation is a significant contribution toward the $32,000 needed to build a house for the kids.  Thanks Amy!

Randy Forbes, Pastor at Norton Wesleyan, shares some events that are coming up in their church Easter weekend: A “Son” Rise service; Easter Sunday morning breakfast; an Easter egg hunt at the church for the children of the church and community; the regular morning service; an event in the afternoon for young adults; and in the evening at 7:00 P.M., Pastor Randy will present a one-man play called “40 Knots to Heaven,” a play about a sailor who finds the Lord on his journey, finds faith in the difficulties, and sails on for Jesus.  This is a full day!  Thanks for the extra efforts to connect with the community.

World Vision’s 2012 Annual Church Leaders’ Forum – World Changers: Two locations in the Maritimes; Moncton at Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre, Wednesday, May 9; Halifax at Grace Chapel, Thursday, May 10.  Both events are 9:30 A.M. – 12 Noon.

Correction – In the last edition of Under Sail it should have said that Jacob Ebbett, not Joe, received a strong recall vote to Havelock, NB.  Sorry for any confusion.

“Taking Grace to New Places” was the theme for the 2012 Easter Offering for North American Missions.   Some of our churches participate in this, and it is certainly a worthy endeavor for all of our churches.  The goals are to intensify prayer, raise partners for more evangelism and  church growth, and pursue our Wesleyan passion for multiplying Christ-followers and new churches in cities across North America.  The General Department of Evangelism & Church Growth (E & CG) of The Wesleyan Church has taken a radically new approach for the Easter Offering this year.  Instead of asking every pastor to make a direct appeal to those in the pews, they are simply asking that each Local Board of Administration set aside a gift of at least $150 or more to send to E&CG during the month of April.  Every church can do this, and I would encourage you to do so!  The Easter Offering is about working together to multiply healthy churches and Christ-followers.  Thank you for helping to fulfill this wonderful theme: “Taking Grace to New Places.”

Pastor Ken Banks, Truro – Central Nova Wesleyan, reports that their Acts of Kindness Sunday on April 1st was a positive experience for both the congregation and the community.  They had 35 people take part in either giving away free flower packets door-to-door, topping up washer fluid for free at a local gas station, or giving away hot dogs at a busy street corner in town.  They handed out “business card” invitations for their Easter service during these events.  Prior to going out on this venture, the whole church (90 people) gathered together at 10 am for praise and prayer, and then the Kindness Teams headed out at 10:30 am.   Rev. Connie Stewart preached a message to those who chose to remain, and Pastor Ken went with the teams.  Their goal was to see 170+ in attendance on Easter Sunday, and they had 138 in bad weather! (lya 83).*  The church is following up with the new people who attended.  Pastor Ken is excited not only about the new contacts, but also what the experience did for the church people.

Easter News:
Portions of the Maritimes experienced a snow storm on Easter Sunday.  Moncton had 23 cm, and a few churches had to cancel services.  Others pressed on!  At least 80% of our churches (or more) had to deal with the weather

Pastor L.D. Buckingham, Moncton Wesleyan, reports that their church had just under 2000 people in attendance on Easter Sunday in spite of the bad weather!

Pastor Scott Lewis reports that on Easter Sunday morning Lower Hainesville Wesleyan joins annually with the Staple Settlement Baptist Church for a Sunrise Service on top of Crabbe Mountain.  This year, in spite of a snowstorm, they had 26 people standing on top of the mountain at 7:30 in the morning!  Pastor Scott says he was quite white when he got in his truck to head to breakfast!

Pastor Glen McVicar reports that Lower Brighton Wesleyan (lya 46), under the direction of Willie Thompson, held an “all-nighter” for the teens on Thursday night into Good Friday morning.  There were 40 teens and 8 workers.  The theme was “I Can” and the teens made a wall out of 777 pop cans at one end of the gym.  It was pretty impressive!  The children had an Easter Party and the Easter Egg Hunt had over 2,000 chocolate eggs to find (wow), and 55 attended the event!  Easter Sunday morning was a great celebration and one man gave his life to Christ!  That makes two men who have given their lives to Christ recently in this congregation.

Pastor AJ Thomas, Halifax-Deep Water Church, reports that they had 4 baptisms Easter Sunday morning, and “a whole mess of people trusting Jesus for a comeback in their lives!”  There were 293 in attendance (lya 170).

Pastor Bill Lea, West Head Wesleyan, reports that they had over 100 attend their Good Friday service, 100 attend their 6:30 Sunrise and Breakfast Service, 247 attend their 10:30 AM worship service (lya 84), and 150 attend the 6:00 PM service.  Pastor Bill says, “The icing on the cake was a young lady that gave her life to the Lord Sunday evening.  They have also reached a new high of 130 for Sunday School, which is amazing.  God is definitely on the move in the West Head community. One excited gentleman, a carpenter by trade, remarked as he was leaving the service, “Buy the wood and make up the plans!  We’re growing fast!”

Pastor Nick Graham, Maple Ridge Wesleyan, says they had an awesome time Easter Sunday morning in church.  It was a very high-spirited service.  Even though it was snowing, they still had 244 in attendance (lya 103)!  They also baptized 10 people – 9 were planned, and 1 was on the spot!   Pastor Nick says, “I won’t soon forget this day.  I’m so stoked for what’s yet to come!”

Pastor Gary Churchill, Miramichi Wesleyan, reports that a musical drama entitled “What Do You Need to Believe?” was presented on two consecutive evenings of the Easter weekend (Good Friday & Saturday) with a combined attendance of 290 (lya 52).  There were 43 people involved in the production as cast and crew.  Among the responses, eight people indicated that they were uncertain or confused about what they believe about Christ and want to know more.   Three people were baptized on Sunday, April 15th!

Pastor Nelson Koonce, Bangor Pathway, reports 94 for Easter (lya 65) and they also had ten people join the church!

Perth-Andover, NB Flood Clean-up

On Monday (April 9th) of the NB Easter Break a busload of forty-five volunteers from Kingswood University and Sussex Wesleyan Church traveled to Perth-Andover, New Brunswick, to help with the clean-up efforts after the Saint John River overflowed its banks creating the worst flood in Perth-Andover’s recent history.  Over 500 residents were evacuated from their homes the end of March and approximately 25 million dollars worth of damages occurred.  Organizers Rev. Kirk Sabine of Kingswood University and Rev. Rob MacCallum, Lead Pastor of Sussex Wesleyan, worked with personnel from Samaritan’s Purse to coordinate the relief efforts of their volunteers.  Perth-Andover Wesleyan Church, one of the buildings damaged in the flood, was filled with over eight feet of water.  Although the sanctuary was not affected, Senior Pastor Rev. Reg Thomas and church members have completely gutted the basement.  Pastor Reg says, “Our people are in good spirits and we are back in our own church for services.  We are getting back to some sense of normalcy.”  The basement of their church is off-limits, and they are dealing with constricted space issues as a result.  Pastor Reg expresses his thanks, and that of his congregation, to all the churches on the District who have been so kind and gracious in sending donations to help in their time of need.  He says the support has been both overwhelming and a blessing!  They are still waiting on decisions to be made as it relates to government financial aid.  The church will need at least $150,000 to restore and repair their building (and that’s a ballpark number only).

Speaking of “clean-up…

Beulah Camp Work Day is going to be May 26th, with a rain date of June 2nd.   There are always a number of things that need to be done in order to prepare for the camping season.  This is a great opportunity for the men, women, and teens of your church to be involved in a broader ministry while at the same time building relationships with each other.  Put this information in your church bulletin, and if you have a group that would be willing to take part, please contact Bruce and Roxie Cheney at Beulah Camp, and let them know how many from your church will be participating.  This information will aid in the planning of the projects, and also the meal preparation.  Contact Bruce at Cheney@beulahcamp.com or (506) 468-2900.  By the way, the water is now on at Beulah!

Pastors and Churches:

Fredericton – Crosspoint Vote Results – Crosspoint voted 99% in favor of having Pastors Conard Symonds and Mark Brewer serve as co-pastors for the next two years.  Pastor Conard’s responsibilities will decrease and Pastor Mark’s will increase over that period of time.  Both men are currently on the Crosspoint staff.

Stefan Gilbert, a 2011 Kingswood University graduate, has been appointed by the District Board of Administration to serve at the Shelburne Wesleyan Church.  Pastor Ben Medel has resigned.  Stefan will take up his new responsibilities at the normal transition time for pastors and churches following Beulah.  Stefan’s wife, Deborah, is also a Kingswood University graduate, Class of 2010, and the daughter of Pastor Denn and Angela Guptill.

Pastor Greg Hanson resigned from the Charlottetown – Sunrise Church April 15th.  He and his wife, Shera, have served this congregation for thirteen years as church planters.  Greg will be taking a part-time position at Kings Valley Wesleyan and working with Pastor Mark Worth in the area of Spiritual Formation.  I will be meeting with the core people of the Charlottetown congregation next week regarding next steps.

Our Sympathy:

Rev. F. Lyle Harvey has been retired and living at Beulah for the last 4-5 years.  He passed away on Easter Sunday, April 8th, at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  He has Grand Manan roots, and is more widely known to our older pastors and ministers.  He pastored in six Wesleyan Churches, two in Eastern Canada and four in the USA.  His ministerial credentials are held in the Eastern New York-New England District (formerly Champlain District) where he has been listed as one of their Retired Ordained Ministers.  A memorial service was held to honor his life at the Brown’s Flat Wesleyan Fellowship in Brown’s Flat, NB on Friday, April 13, 2012.  Rev. Stuart Steeves brought the message.  There was also a memorial service for his family and friends in the USA in Catskill, NY on Monday evening, April 16th.  We extend our condolences to Lyle’s wife, Gwenda, and the family.

Rev. Connie (Duane) Stewart’s mother, Mabel (MacPherson) Horton, passed away April 18th.  She lived in Truro, NS.  Her funeral was held at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Truro, NS on Sunday, April 22nd.  We extend our condolences to Pastor Connie and the rest of the family.

Linda Lamos, District Director of Children’s Ministry, has held two District Huddles for Children’s Ministry workers this year, one at Presque Isle Wesleyan in March, and the most recent one April 21st at Yarmouth Wesleyan.  In Yarmouth, 60 people attend a power-packed 4 hours that included rallies, breakouts, and lunch together.  Every church represented received several free resources provided by Group Publishing.  There was positive feedback, and excitement is building in the Yarmouth area for what can be accomplished in Children’s Ministry.  The next Huddle will return to Presque Isle Wesleyan on September 15, 2012.

Rally in the Valley
was held at Kings Valley Wesleyan (KVWC) May 4-5 and experienced record registrations of over 580 teens from across the region.  Attendance was over 650 for the Friday evening concert and rally.  The Holy Spirit was in the place in a very marked way.  Both Lead Pastor Jim Agrell and Associate Pastor Brent Ingersoll told me there were record numbers of commitments with hundreds responding publicly in each service.  Jeff Eckart was the guest speaker.  Jeff started a ministry in the USA called Claim Your Campus, and he is a former Youth Pastor at Kentwood Community Wesleyan Church in Michigan.  Special thanks to Dave Mason, Youth Pastor at KV, and the Team that worked with him to put together this God-impacting event.  God is good!

Easter Attendance: The Atlantic District had an Easter Sunday attendance of 11,182 in the midst of a snow storm and inclement weather that impacted over 80% of our churches.  Three of the churches had to cancel their Easter services.  However, the really good news is that 88 people gave their lives to Christ, and 50 were baptized!

Pastor Graham Perry, Trinity Wesleyan, Florenceville-Bristol, NB, shares that in their recent Annual Missions Convention on April 29th the congregation committed to giving $23,448.00 in the next year to missions through their Faith Promise giving.  This is above and beyond the Tithes and Offerings.   The special speaker for the weekend was Rev. John Croft who is Director of Missionary Funding for Global Partners.  John will be succeeding Rev. John Connor as the new Global Partners Director of the Jesus Film Ministries, January 1, 2013.

Halifax-Deep Water Wesleyan Church is less than 5 years old and their 7th missions team was on the ground in Haiti last week.  This medical team ran a clinic for people who otherwise wouldn’t have regular access to health care.  A worthy ministry done in Jesus’ Name!  AJ Thomas is the Lead Pastor.

Check it out on the Beulah website which has been re-tooled, and is now up and running – www.beulahcamp.com

Recent DS Church Visits:
Westchester, NS (April 1) –
There were 25 people present in the service (lya 23).  Since my last visit several months ago, the platform area has been upgraded.  The railing along the front edge of the platform has been removed which opens up this whole area.  It has made the platform more useable for musical groups, and special events.  New carpet has been laid which brightens up the front of the church.  The congregation is sensitive to the needs in the community.  Recently they took part in a community-wide event that was held to assist a local family that had lost their home and business in a fire.  Pastor Linda Fillmore is helping the Westchester congregation to be strategically involved in local ministry beyond their four walls.

Shelburne (April 15) - I preached the message and then held a congregational meeting following the service to up-date them on the pastoral search and transition as a result of Pastor Ben Medel’s resignation.  There were 35 in attendance (lya 40).

Beals (April 22) – Pastor George Woodward
has done a good job in leading this church.  You can sense the love and unity when you enter the door.  The church has seen people come to Christ in the past year.  I met three men who readily bore witness to this as I spoke with them in the lobby before and after church.  Pastor George is making plans for an ocean baptism this summer.  There were 49 people in church (lya 45).  Attendance has doubled in the last three years, and giving has increased.   PTL!  Several people gave Joanne birthday cards, as this day was her actual birthday.  She spent the first two years of her life on Beals when her dad pastored the church.  The recognition was a very thoughtful touch by Pastor George and people.

St. John’s – Avalon (April 29) – I traveled to St. John’s, NL to be present when Pastors Darren & Janel Clark announced their resignation to their congregation on Sunday morning.  I also conducted 3 related meetings while there,  attended the evening service at Mount Pearl – Solid Rock, and met with Pastor Stuart Marples and the Solid Rock LBA.

Fredericton – Crosspoint (May 6) – Crosspoint holds three Sunday morning services at 8:30, 10:00, and 11:30.  They have been over 500 in attendance the last three weeks – 501 (April 29), 510 (May 6) and 521 on Mother’s Day (lya 424).  The spirit and the momentum are excellent.  The Sunday I was there Assistant Pastor Mark Brewer brought the message.  It was scriptural, relevant, and well done.  Pastor Tim Guptill is the Lead Pastor.

Pastor & Church Transitions
Pastor Mike Agrell will be returning to the Atlantic District having accepted the position of Family Life Pastor at Maple Ridge Wesleyan ChurchNick Graham is the Lead Pastor.

Pastors Darren & Janel Clark
resigned from St. John’s – Avalon on April 29th after serving 6 years in NL and planting the Avalon church.  The Clarks are going to move to Sydney, NS and will become involved in the Sydney-New Roots Church Plant as tent makers.  Kevin Myers is the Church Planter and Pastor of New Roots.  Both couples are excited about the future.

Dave Ziglar
candidated at Scarborough-Coastal on April 29th and has accepted a 97% positive vote to be their next pastor.

Congratulations to the Gilberts! Payson Malia Gilbert was born on May 9, 2012, weighing 7 lbs. 15 oz.  She is the daughter of Stefan & Deborah Gilbert, and little sister to Capri.  Proud maternal grandparents are Pastor Denn & Angela Guptill, Cornerstone Wesleyan, Hammonds Plains, NS.  Stefan has been appointed as the pastor of the Hope Wesleyan Church in Shelburne, NS and will start there in mid-June.

Congratulations to the Plaiziers!  Adele Joy arrived in this world on May 12, 2012, just in time for Mother’s Day!  She weighed 5 lbs. 6 oz., and is the first child of Lead Pastor AJ and Julia Plaizier who minister at the Corbett Ave. Wesleyan Church in Fredericton, NB.

On March 27, Rev. Duane MacLeod received the prestigious Board of Governors’ Award during the first annual Dalhousie Impact Awards ceremony in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  A second year student at Dalhousie University School of Nursing (Yarmouth site), Duane was the first distance student, as well as nursing student, to obtain this honor.  The Governors’ Award recognizes outstanding Dalhousie students (up to four maximum per year) who maintain high academic standards while demonstrating exceptional contributions or leadership outside the classroom.  As a recipient of the award, Duane was presented with the Dalhousie Scarf, an impact award, the Gold Governor’s Pin, and a monetary gift.  Congratulations! (Reported in News at Kingswood, May 9, 2012)  Duane is a former staff member at Yarmouth Wesleyan.

The 12th General Conference of The Wesleyan Church will be a pivotal point in our church’s history.  The decisions made during its conference sessions will impact its missional journey for years to come.  Wesleyans around the world have already been praying for General Conference 2012 which will be held June 2-6 in Lexington, KY.  Please add your prayers for God’s help and direction during these important days that God’s will and purposes would be accomplished, and that God’s Holy Spirit would be poured out on every session, event, and participant.

Sandra Moon, Vice President of Development, Kingswood University, has posted the information on the Kingswood Classic Golf Tournament which is set to go on June 16, 2012.  This is a great opportunity for the golfers (and duffers!) across the Atlantic District (and beyond) to have a great day of fellowship and fun, and assist KU in a strategic way.  Sandra says that thanks to the Corporate Sponsors, all golfers will play for free and 100% of their pledge support will go to Kingswood University Scholarships and Financial Aid.  Scholarship naming rights will go to the top 3 fundraising teams.  Will your church have a team with a scholarship named after it?  Maybe you can encourage a team or two from your church to be part of this year’s Classic.  Check out the website for details at  www.kingswoodclassic.ca

Follow 2012 – This year’s International Wesleyan Youth Convention is fast approaching. Thousands of students have had their life altered because of their encounter with Jesus at these events.  God moves, students respond, and lives are forever changed.  Follow 12 will take place in Louisville, KY, December 28-31, 2012.  For details go to: mywycon.com

General Conference 2012:  The 12th General Conference of The Wesleyan Church met in Lexington, KY, June 2-6, 2012.  Dr. Jo Anne Lyon was elected as the sole General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church.  She was elected in 2008 as the first female General Superintendent in the history of The Wesleyan Church.  Dr. Lyon is an ordained Wesleyan minister.  She is the founder of World Hope International, the official relief and development partner of The Wesleyan Church.  Along with moving to the sole GS model, the Headquarters structure has been reconfigured to four main Divisions, each with an Executive Director, overseeing the work of the church.  The four Divisions and their Executive Directors are: Communication and Administration, Rev. Wayne MacBeth; Church Multiplication and Discipleship, Dr. Jim Dunn; Global Partners, Dr. Dennis Jackson; Education and Clergy Development, Rev. Russ Gunsalus.  The Atlantic District had 14 elected delegates in attendance at General Conference and 57% of those were first-time delegates.

Beulah Camp 2012 starts next week!  The dates are July 6-15.  Pastors Steve and Larry Wilson are the special speakers; Scott & Elizabeth Rhyno are the worship leaders; the EXALT Choir will be returning – it’s their 10th anniversary!; the Webb Family will be joining us for Wednesday evening; ministries for children and teens will be happening throughout the week; other special events will be taking place as well.  Plan to make Beulah part of your summer experience.  Check it out on the Beulah website.  You can access the detailed schedule at www.beulahcamp.com

Special thanks to Beulah Caretaker Bruce Cheney and his wife, Roxie, and the many volunteers who have accomplished so much in the last month as the buildings and grounds have been prepared for the summer camping season.  The place looks great!  IT IS SINCERELY APPRECIATED!

May 27, 2012 was a mile-marker day for Sackville – Crossroads Wesleyan Church.  Church members, parishioners, and friends gathered to dedicate their recently purchased church facility.  The Sackville congregation has been meeting at what was the former Peace Lutheran Church for the last few years.  The Lutherans held their last service in the building December 27, 2009, and agreed to sell the building to the Wesleyans.  Several years ago, under Pastor Charles Bain’s leadership, the church had purchased 13 acres of land for $160,000.  In recent years, a land developer has been interested in the property.  They sold the land to him for $800,000, and then purchased the Peace Lutheran Church and seven acres of land for $650,000!  We were privileged to dedicate this facility debt-free in a real estate market where land is premium!  Sackville-Crossroads has only had three pastors in its 32-year history – Church Planter and Founding Pastor, Rev. Charles Bain; Rev. Mike White; and the current pastor, Rev. Michael Zottarelli.  All three pastors were present, and took part in the service.  (Crossroads is the new name of the Sackville Wesleyan Church).

Mel K. Norton was elected Mayor of Saint John, NB, the largest city in the province, on May 14th.  His brother, Greg Norton, was also elected to serve in Ward 1 as a councillor.  I was privileged to be present at the swearing in ceremony on May 28th in the Saint John Council Chambers.  The new mayor’s father-in-law, the Honourable Justice B. Richard Bell, administered the Oath of Office, and the mayor’s father, Rev. Mel T. Norton, offered an anointed Prayer of Invocation for the mayor and the new Council.  It’s a wonderful thing to see young men and women with Wesleyan heritage stepping up to serve in places of responsibility where they can make a positive difference.

Pastor Mel Norton, Hartland Wesleyan, says that this past year, in addition to their regular giving to local missions and outreach projects, their church raised close to $8,000 for Global Partners to go towards the purchase of the Jesus Film Kits.  The Jesus Film is currently the single best return on investment in reaching people with the Gospel.

I was at Crystal Wesleyan on May 20th.  Peter Main is the pastor.  There were 27 in attendance for the Sunday morning service (lya 24).  It is very evident this congregation ministers to the needs of their parishioners, and have a global view.  They make a concerted effort to support missions and the ministries of the District.  Thanks for being team players!

Pastor Dwayne & Melodie Hopkins had their last official Sunday at Scarborough – Coastal Community Wesleyan Church on May 27th, after 13 years at CCC.  Assistant Pastors David & Trista Collins are currently leading the services and sharing the preaching until the new pastor, Dave Ziglar, arrives in mid-July.  They asked if I could come for one of those Sundays, and so I was with them June 17th.  It was good to connect with the congregation in the midst of the transition.  Several families were away due to Father’s Day family commitments but that didn’t dampen the spiritual energy!  There was a good range of participation by congregational members in the service.  The people are grateful for the ministry of Pastor Dwayne & Melodie, and they are excited about the future.

We have ten churches on islands!  Joanne and I visited Grand Manan Island this past weekend and were able to connect with all of our pastors and their spouses – the Rideouts (North Head), McComiskeys (Seal Cove), Perrys and Branscombes (Grand Harbour).  We were at Grand Harbour – Central Wesleyan on Sunday morning.  Kirk Perry is the Senior Pastor and Tim Branscombe is the Associate Pastor.  Good coffee, friendly people, warm church “climate,” good generational cross-section, and a good service led by Pastor Kirk.

River Valley Wesleyan Church in Grand Bay-Westfield, NB is hosting their annual dinner meeting for the Wesleyan Missionary Alumni Fellowship to be held July 14th at 1:00 PM.  Any missionaries who have served with Global Partners or Wesleyan World Missions for two years or more are invited to attend.  Contact Joyce Moore at (506) 474-0362 or sawech@nb.sympatico.ca if you plan to attend.

Kings Valley Wesleyan recently baptized 21 people – one a 96-year-old man!  Jim Agrell is the Lead Pastor.

District BYF Retreat 2012 – The annual District BYF Retreat, under the leadership of John Symonds, is set for Friday, August 17 – Sunday, August 19 at Beulah Camp.  Pastor Conard Symonds is the special speaker and music will be provided by Mark Gorveatte & Friends.  Registration information has been sent to the pastors and local churches.   For further registration information, contact Hugh McKnight at (506) 472-1116.  The registration deadline is July 27th.

Kingswood University held their Annual Golf Classic June 16th.  Contributions from Corporate Sponsors covered all expenses for the tournament and enabled KU to invite golfers to play for free, and focus solely on the purpose of raising scholarship funds and making friends for Kingswood University.  There was 100% turn-out from those registered and 75 golfers raised $22,000 in support of students at Kingswood.

Beulah – District Office:  The District Office at Beulah opened on Tuesday, June 19th.  The DS and Joanne are operating out of the Beulah office (506-468-2286).  Karrilee is still in Moncton (506-383-8326) until next Wednesday when she will re-locate to Beulah for 2-3 weeks.

Pastor Ben & Bayley Medel are pleased to announce the birth of their second child, Ari William, born June 22nd, weighing 6 lbs. 8 oz.  Ari has a big brother, Jasper!  Pastor Ben has just joined the staff at Hammonds Plains-Cornerstone.

York Care Centre Request: York Care Centre is in need of some decent hymnals. Sixty – Seventy books would be great.  Many of our churches are not using a hymnal these days so here is an opportunity to put them to good use.  If you have hymnals you would be willing to donate then contact Pastor Pete Thomas, York Care Centre Chaplain, at peter.thomas@yorkmanor.nb.ca or (506) 444-3880 ext.2208.

The weather cooperated, people came, and God showed up!  Beulah Camp 2012 was much anticipated, and is now behind us.  Rev. Scott & Elizabeth Rhyno gave excellent oversight to the music and worship.  Both speakers, Rev. Steve Wilson and Rev. Larry Wilson, presented biblical truth that was relevant to life.  There were several services with people finding help at the altar, and many people benefited from the faithful ministry of the Holy Spirit to our hearts. People appreciated the expanded activities schedule that was offered.  We say a special thank you to Executive Director of Camping, Pastor Rob Trafton, and Beulah Activities Director, Andrea Gunter, for providing a wide selection of things to do on a daily basis.  The activities were family-friendly.  Choices were available for all age groups, and took in a range of different interests.  Rev. Mark & Karen Cooney, and Rev. Nick & Beth Graham did a good job leading the VBS program throughout the week.  On Wednesday evening, while the tabernacle was comfortably full, and people enjoyed the musical ministry of the Webb family and the preaching that followed, 200 teens and another 50 adults met on the Beulah ball field for a first-ever evening Rally for teens.  This was under the direction of Willie Thompson and the Rhynos.  It was a winner!  Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, our General Superintendent, was present for our District Conference on Thursday, and then the Ordination Service on Friday.  This was her first time to be with us since her election as GS.  This year, the following people were ordained, commissioned, and validated: Ordained Ministers – Kyle Belden, Jeremy MacDonald, and Vince Robertson; Commissioned Minister – Jasper Rideout; Commissioned Special Worker – Debbie Rooney; Validation of Ordination for Minister Transferring from another Denomination – Nelson Koonce.  Sunday afternoon, the last day of the Camp, nine pastors took part as 16 people were baptized!  One of those was a spontaneous, in-the-moment step of obedience!

Then, the EXALT Choir ministered in the last service.  It was the 10th anniversary for EXALT.  What a wonderful celebration!  Our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers and pastors who contributed to make Beulah possible, and special thanks to our caretaker and his wife, Bruce & Roxie Cheney.  The dates for Beulah 2013 are July 5-14, 2013.  The speakers are Rev. Dwight Robertson, Founding President & CEO of Kingdom Building Ministries, and Rev. AJ Thomas, Church Planter & Founding Pastor of Halifax-Deep Water Wesleyan Church.  Rev. Scott & Elizabeth Rhyno will be returning as the Worship Leaders.

Dr. L.D. Buckingham, after 38 consecutive years (1974-2012) as the Atlantic District Assistant DS, did not allow his name to be nominated for re-election by the DBA.  Pastor Buckingham served with four different DS’s: Dr. H.R. Ingersoll, Rev. Ray Barnwell, Dr. H.C. Wilson, and Rev. David LeRoy.  His contributions, insights, and counsel across the terms of four DS’s has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.  The District presented Pastor Buckingham with a Citation and a gift of appreciation, and then held a reception for Pastor and Mrs. Buckingham following District Conference and the Thursday evening service.

New Assistant DS:  Rev. Tim Guptill, former Lead Pastor of Fredericton-Crosspoint Wesleyan Church, and the new Lead Pastor Elect at Moncton Wesleyan, was elected by the DBA in its July 6th meeting to serve as the new Assistant DS.  This became effective at the rise of the District Conference.

Transitions:

Charlottetown Sunrise is in a transition.  Pastor Greg and Shera Hanson spent 11 years with this church, having planted and forged a group from the ground up.  The Hansons feel their time in Charlottetown has come to an end, and God has released them from this ministry responsibility.  Several conversations have been held in the last three months with the folks at Sunrise.  It appears that they will most likely disperse to other local congregations, including some to Hampton – Island Wesleyan.  Pastor Greg Hanson will be serving as a part-time staff person at Kings Valley Wesleyan.

St. John’s Avalon is a church plant that was born out of the calling of Pastors Darren and Janel Clark to Newfoundland seven years ago.  There is a core group connected with the Avalon Church that sees the potential and are prepared to step up to help it happen.  The Clarks feel released from this ministry and returned to the mainland in early July.  They will be partnering with Kevin and Laura Myers in the Sydney New Roots church plant.  This will strengthen the team and ultimately increase the harvest.

Benchmarks for Atlantic District Churches:  I talked with our pastors at our District Ministerial last February about “benchmarks” for our local churches that would be realistic and obtainable targets.  Benchmarks have been set based on the stats that were submitted at the end of the last fiscal year.  These were distributed to the ministerial and lay delegates at District Conference.  The criteria for the benchmarks are as follows: 1) Your church has clearly articulated a missional component in its vision and core values. 2) Your church reports salvations that number at least 5% of your average primary weekend worship attendance for the year. 3) Your church reports baptisms that number at least 25% of those who have been saved during the year. 4) Your church has invested 10% or more of its annual operating budget into specific community, regional, or global outreach, which includes church planting or missional initiatives. 5) Your church is growing its primary worship gathering by a minimum of 5% each year.  It’s understood that a few churches would have to stretch to make their benchmarks, and other churches would need to re-set their benchmarks higher in order to have realistic targets that stretch them, and involve a faith element.  Churches that apply this will be in a better place in 2-3 years!

District Best Years Fellowship Retreat 2012: The annual District BYF Retreat is set for Friday, August 17 – Sunday, August 19 at Beulah Camp.  Pastor John Symonds is overseeing the event this year.  Pastor Conard Symonds is the special speaker and music will be provided by Mark Gorveatte & Friends.  Registration information has been sent to the pastors and local churches.   For further registration information, contact Hugh McKnight at (506) 472-1116.  The registration deadline is July 27th.

The JESUS film is going to Cuba: Within the first 48 hours at The Wesleyan Church’s Twelfth General Conference, June 2-6, in Lexington, KY, enough funds were raised to show the JESUS film throughout Cuba over the next three years.

Through a joint effort on Sunday morning of the conference, church leaders, delegates, and visitors raised $39,000 designated for the JESUS Film Partnership of Global Partners.  Prior to the offering being taken, Dr. H.C. Wilson, former General Director of Global Partners, announced the monies would be used to help fund Campaign 300, a promotion intended to take the JESUS film to 21 countries via 30 teams in the next three years.  The hope is to reach three million people and plant 300 churches.  Word was received that very day that permission had been given by the Cuban government to offer public showings of the JESUS film.  Global Partners officials quickly determined to use the $39,000 for the open door in Cuba.  On Tuesday morning of General Conference, District Superintendents and Global Partners’ District Directors attended a breakfast sponsored by the Missions Division of The Wesleyan Church.  They were challenged to add to Sunday’s offering to fully support the Cuban JESUS film team for a total of three years.  The response was overwhelming, and this challenge was exceeded with additional commitments totaling $44,000.  The total General Conference offering and commitments for the JESUS film totaled $83,000.  The Wesleyan Church presence in Cuba includes 37 congregations and house churches in four different provinces. Wesleyans in Cuba are eager to use the JESUS film to help spread the gospel.  The Cuban JESUS film team will be launched in August 2012.  The JESUS film is the most translated film in history, available in more than 1,100 languages.  The initial goal of Campaign 300 was $1.8 million, and Global Partners is pleased to report that at present nearly $2 million has been received in cash and pledges. For more information visit the Global Partners website(Source: Global Partners)

The Atlantic District partners with The Wesleyan Church in Cuba, and will contribute $6,000 to this venture over the next three years.

This past May, Crandall University awarded their Leadership Award to Dr. Arthur W. Maxwell, Kingswood University’s former President and Academic Dean.  Given in “recognition of Dr. Maxwell’s career in Christian higher education within The Wesleyan Church and his influence beyond,” the award was presented during Crandall’s morning graduation ceremonies on May 5th at which Dr. Maxwell delivered the convocation address.  Congratulations Dr. Maxwell!

Captain Ashley Collette, daughter of Angela (Morehouse) Thurston, and granddaughter of Rev. Ron & Kay Morehouse, grew up in Sandford, Yarmouth County, NS.  She received the Medal of Military Valour from Governor General David Johnston at a June 22nd ceremony in Ottawa, ON.  The medal recognizes an act of valour or devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.  Captain Collette received the medal as a result of her 2010 deployment to Afghanistan.  She was a platoon commander from May to December 2010, and demonstrated frontline leadership that was critical to her soldiers’ success during intense combat in Afghanistan.  We extend our congratulations to Captain Collette, and express our sincere thanks to her and to all who serve in the Armed Forces.  We concur with the Governor General who said in his remarks to the recipients of the various awards that day: “You are all striving for and working towards a more peaceful, more just society.  As members of the military, you know that peace is a sign of strength, that it is a force more powerful than war, and that it requires vigilance to maintain.”  (Source: Yarmouth County Vanguard, June 23, 2012)

Zachary d’Entremont, Assistant Pastor at Halifax-Metro, was married to Laura Ells on Saturday, July 21st, 2012.  The wedding ceremony took place at the New Minas, NS Baptist Church.  Congratulations Zach & Laura!

Nina Haywood passed away at Carlton Manor in Woodstock, NB on Friday, July 13, 2012 at the age of 86.  She was part of a very unique fraternity.  Nina was a Reformed Baptist missionary.  From its inception in 1888 until it merged with The Wesleyan Church in 1966, the RB’s had 37 missionaries.  Nina, and her husband Eric, are part of this group.  Nina went to South Africa in 1951.  Eric arrived in 1954, and they were married shortly after his arrival.  When the Rhodesian field opened, the Haywoods became the pioneer resident missionaries to Bethesda Mission Station near Livingstone and Victoria Falls.  Nina set up a medical clinic and ministered to the physical needs of the people while her husband preached and addressed the spiritual needs.  They served in Africa in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.  They were at Bethany Bible College in ’79-’80, Havelock, NS Wesleyan from ‘80-’89, and Amherst Wesleyan from ’90-’92.  In her most immediate family, Nina is survived by her husband, Rev. Eric Haywood; and a daughter, Deborah Grant (Paul) of Woodstock.  Several other relatives survive her as well.  Please keep Eric and the family in your prayers.

Westchester Wesleyan Church will celebrate its 110th Anniversary on September 8-9, 2012.  The Anniversary Service will be held on Saturday, September 8th at 2:30 PM.  Former pastor, Charles Bain, will be the special speaker.  Other things are planned for the weekend as well.  Contact Pastor Linda Fillmore at linda473223@gmail.com for more details.

Joanne and I will be on vacation for the next two weeks starting July 30th.  We will be back in the office August 13th.  My Administrative Assistant, Karrilee Bremner, will be available in the Moncton Office (506-383-8326) during regular summer office hours (Monday-Thursday).  In case of emergency, contact the Assistant DS, Tim Guptill, at 506-857-2293.

Labour Day is now in the rearview mirror!  I trust you all had a great summer.  Under Sail is well overdue, so thank you for your patience.  Let me pass along to you a few things that are happening around the District.  It’s not exhaustive, but it will give you a little taste of what is happening in the life of our people and churches.

Benchmarks:  During our District Conference I spoke about “benchmarks” for each of our churches.  Two of those benchmarks are in the areas of people coming to Christ and baptisms.  We have 58 churches and in the last week I have heard from 13 of our pastors.  Since May 1st, in those churches alone, 44 people have been saved and 49 people have been baptized!  The churches are: Bangor-Pathway, Crystal, Digby, Easton, Florenceville-Bristol, Fredericton-Crosspoint, Grand Harbour, Havelock, NS, Kentville, Maple Ridge, Moncton, Seal Cove, and Sussex.

Caton’s island:  In that same vein, Caton’s island had a great summer of ministry to children, teens, and families.  60 people gave their lives to Christ, and another 68 made re-commitments for a total of 128 people making commitments to follow Jesus!

Perth-Andover Wesleyan Church: The residents of Perth-Andover, NB have been dealing with the devastating aftermath of the Saint John River flooding this past March.  Pastor Reg Thomas gave me a brief update on the church’s progress since then:

  • In June they received their final settlement from the insurance company, a little over $100,000.  That is a lot of money but it does not cover the renovation costs.  Nothing has been received from EMO or the Government.
  • The Local Church Board (LBA) made the decision to refinish the basement to the point of usability for the church’s ministries, Fall launches, and Winter programs.
  • A Flood Futures Committee has been appointed with the express purpose of finding a way to get the church out of the flood plain!
  • Construction started about mid-July and is approx. 1/2 done. The target for completion is mid-September.
  • The Fall programs launch on Oct 7th.
  • There has been a wonderful spirit of renewal in the church in the last 3 months.
  • There has been an influx of young adults and young married couples who are hungering for God.
  • Pastor Reg says, “We’re probably about a year behind program-wise but a year ahead in community building!  So it’s all good!!”

The pastors and people of Perth-Andover Wesleyan express their sincere appreciation to every church and person on the District who gave so graciously to help them in their time of need.

Thank you! During Beulah, in addition to the regular offerings, over $10,000 was raised to purchase a dumping trailer for Beulah/Caton’s and a much needed riding mower (used) in good condition for the maintenance of the Beulah grounds.  These are practical tools that make a big difference to the staff and volunteers who do such a good job of maintaining the grounds.  Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Atlantic District Huddle on Location – Sept 15, 2012 – Presque Isle Wesleyan, ME – 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

I have already forwarded to our Pastors an important announcement from our District Children’s Ministry Director, Linda Lamos.   It concerns the up-coming Atlantic District Huddle for Children’s Ministry Teams.  This is a great opportunity for your Children’s Ministry Team to interact with other children’s ministry leaders and glean some helpful and practical ideas to use back in your own church.  Linda and those that assist her always do a great job, so I encourage you to take advantage of this.  It’s only $25/person or $100 for 4 or more leaders.  For more information, or to register, contact Linda Lamos at linda.lamos@kingsvalley.ca

Willow Creek’s Annual Leadership Conference never fails to offer practical insight and inspiration for church leaders of any age, denomination or experience. This year the Canadian Summit will take place on October 18-19, 2012.  More information is available on-line.  Google: The Leadership Centre Willow Creek Canada.

Our Condolences and Prayers are extended to the following families:

Richard Thomas, father of Pastor Rich Thomas who serves at Jonesport Wesleyan, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 13, 2012.  The funeral was held in the Digby Baptist Church on August 17th.  Pastor Rich was the officiating minister.  Thanks to the Atlantic District ministers and spouses who were able to attend.  Thirteen were present.  Rich and Katie really appreciated this support.

Rev. Eric Haywood, retired pastor and missionary, passed away on August 22, 2012 at the age of 88.  His funeral was held at the Woodstock Wesleyan Church on August 25th, with Rev. Dale MacDonald officiating.  He was predeceased by his wife, Nina, who died just a few weeks earlier on July 13th.  Eric was part of a very unique fraternity.  He was a Reformed Baptist missionary.  From its inception in 1888 until it merged with The Wesleyan Church in 1966, the RB’s had 37 missionaries.  Eric was part of this group.  He arrived in South Africa in 1954, and married Nina shortly after his arrival.  When the Rhodesian field opened, the Haywoods became the pioneer resident missionaries to Bethesda Mission Station near Livingstone and Victoria Falls.  Nina set up a medical clinic and ministered to the physical needs of the people while Eric preached and addressed the spiritual needs.  They served in Africa in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s.  They were at Bethany Bible College in ’79-’80, Havelock, NS Wesleyan from ‘80-’89, and Amherst Wesleyan from ’90-’92.  In his most immediate family, Eric is survived by his daughter, Deborah Grant (Paul) of Woodstock.  Several other relatives survive him as well.

Terry McDonald, wife of Pastor Norm McDonald who is responsible for Pastoral Care at Fredericton – Corbett Ave. Wesleyan (CAW), passed away on Monday, September 3rd.  Her funeral is today, September 7th, at CAW with Rev. John Symonds officiating, and Rev. AJ Plaizier and Rev. Pete Thomas assisting.

Our congratulations!  Pastor David Hockley and Amy DeMings were married in the Wood’s Harbour Wesleyan Church in Nova Scotia on Saturday, August 11, 2012, with Rev. Rod Guptill officiating.  David is the Pastor of Faith Wesleyan Church in Ingomar, NS.  This is also Amy’s home church.  Amy did her Bethany/Kingswood internship at Wood’s Harbour.

Westchester Wesleyan Church will celebrate its 110th Anniversary this weekend, September 8-9, 2012.  The Anniversary Service will be held on Saturday, September 8th at 2:30 PM.  Former pastor, Charles Bain, will be the special speaker.  Other things are planned for the weekend as well.  Contact Pastor Linda Fillmore at linda473223@gmail.com for more details.

Pastor Kevin Matthews, Executive Pastor at Moncton Wesleyan Church, has been on the staff at MWC for 15 years in various roles.  He has served as Executive Pastor for the last 10 years.  He has accepted a call from the Newcastle Baptist Church in Miramichi, NB and will transition by October 1st.  Thank you, Kevin, for your many years of service at MWC and we wish you God’s best in your new responsibilities.

Snapshots: I have conducted installations for two pastors – Mark McCluskey in Black’s Harbour on July 29th, and Dave Ziglar at Scarborough-Coastal on August 26th.  The District BYF weekend at Beulah in August had one of the highest attendances ever with just over 150 registered.  Everyone enjoyed the ministry of Pastor Conard Symonds, and the music of “Mark & Friends.”  The Beulah Labour Day Wrap-Up Service was well attended.  Thanks to Joanne and all who helped her with the surprise birthday celebration for the DS that followed…and he was surprised!

Changed Lives!  One of my favourite things to do is celebrate with the pastors and churches that are seeing people cross the line of faith, and then are baptized!  Pastor Greg Dakin, Saint John First, recently shared that they have had five people come to Christ, and seven baptisms as they track their church’s benchmarks for this year.  Pastor Raymond Fancy, Amherst Wesleyan, baptized eight people in a backyard pool last month. (It’s good to get it done before the ice sets in!).  Pastor Mel Norton, Hartland Wesleyan, reports that two people were saved recently, and on September 23rd they baptized four people, and three people joined the church.  Pastor Ryan Farrell, Nackawic Wesleyan, had the privilege of baptizing a lady in her early 70’s on September 30th.  Her name is Shirley and she has been living for the Lord for many years.  However, she had never been baptized because she is very afraid of water.  She trusted Jesus with her soul, and now she has entrusted to Him her fear!

Pastor Michael Zottarelli, Sackville Crossroads, reports that they had their kick-off weekend on September 9th.  They ran their annual “Teddy Bear Picnic” on Saturday.  The weather was beautiful, and roughly 140 people attended, which included 20 volunteers.  That weekend they also had their “Free Preview Sunday” and 35 people came out (lya for the same weekend was 17) including 4 new couples!  It has sparked a great sense of excitement and anticipation in the people for what God has in store for them this year!

Houlton Wesleyan launched a six-month “test-run” on a second Sunday morning service this past Sunday, October 7th.  There were 90 people in the 9 AM service and 192 in the 10:30 AM service for a combined total of 282 (There were 215 present on the same Sunday one year ago.)  They also started a strong emphasis on small groups this week using the Steve DeNeff/David Drury book, SoulShift.  They have 10 groups.  Wayne Robertson is the Senior Pastor.

Lead Pastor AJ Plaizier, Fredericton Corbett Ave., shares about the great Sunday they had on September 16th.  They had two services with a combined attendance of 292 (last year’s kick-off was around 260) followed by a BBQ after the 11 AM service.  The goal was to break the elusive 300 barrier!  They didn’t quite make it but they scared it “real bad!”  It’s only a matter of time!  Way to go Corbett!

Halifax Deep Water launched a second Sunday morning service on September 16th, and it has been going well.  There has been a fairly even distribution of attendance between the two gatherings.  Pastor AJ Thomas reports that they had 330 out the first week, and 350 on the second Sunday (lya* 223).

Halifax-Deep Water honoured Pastor Stewart Steeves on September 9th, by bestowing on him the title Pastor Emeritus.  He was present in the service to bring remarks and receive the honour.  Pastor Steeves was pastoring Halifax-Grace Wesleyan Church in the downtown area of Halifax in the early to mid-1980’s.  He began praying faithfully for a ministry like Deep Water to come along to reach people in the downtown area of the city of Halifax in ways that he himself couldn’t.  Almost 30 years later, God would call AJ Thomas to plant a church in downtown Halifax!  How cool is that?!    That’s how Deep Water was born!  Pastor Stewart & Phyllis Steeves are still praying faithfully for the city of Halifax, for Deep Water, and for Pastor AJ and Kelly Thomas!

GP Stats: Global Partners (GP) recently released year-end giving stats for districts and local churches.  There are 33 North American Districts in The Wesleyan Church and the Atlantic District (A.D.) was second in over-all giving to GP by District.  We gave $564,584 to GP (and over $600,000 to global evangelism).

Nine A.D. churches were in the top 100 giving churches to GP: Moncton (10th), Presque Isle (36th), Trinity Florenceville-Bristol (52nd), Hillside Dartmouth (54th), River Valley Grand Bay-Westfield (55th), Woods Harbour (65th), Kings Valley Quispamsis (66th), Deep Water – Halifax (80th), Sussex (93rd).

Five A.D. churches were in the top 50 churches for per capita giving to GP, including the #1 church! – Blissfield (1) at $822/person; Trinity Florenceville-Bristol (23rd) at $293/person, Lower Brighton (39th) at $237/person, River Valley Grand Bay-Westfield (44th) at $224/person, Woods Harbour (44th) at $224/person.

For more detail, see the October-December 2012 issue of GP WorldView.  Several other A.D. churches are mentioned in other categories.  Let me say to all of the A.D. Team – stellar!

Sharon Lewis, wife of Pastor Scott Lewis, Lower Hainesville Wesleyan, shares that they had a very positive VBS.  When Sharon gave the invitation for salvation at the end of one of the Bible lessons, 12 children responded!  In her words, “It was awesome!”  On September 16th, four of the children that got saved showed up for Sunday School.  They brought one of their friends, Ben, who had never been there before!  They’re praying he’ll give his life to Christ as well.

Westchester Wesleyan celebrated its 110th Anniversary on September 8th.  There were 94 people in attendance, which fills the sanctuary!  Pastor Raymond Fancy and the Amherst Wesleyan Worship Team led the music, and several pastors and people with “past history” took part in the service.  Former pastor, Charles Bain, was the special speaker, and I was privileged to bring greetings on behalf of the District.  It was a very fitting time of celebration.

On September 9th I was at Hope Wesleyan in Shelburne, NS and conducted the installation service for Stefan Gilbert.  The pastor is positive about the church, and the people are positive about their new pastor.  That’s a good combination!  We enjoyed a meal and a time of fellowship with the people following the service, and then had opportunity to visit with Pastor Stefan and his wife, Deborah.

I brought greetings in the services at Digby Wesleyan on September 23rdPastor Andrew Maves really feels this is “an awesome time right now” in their church.   They are making huge inroads against their indebtedness (due to the sale of the parsonage), and they are making plans to do a few things on the “missions front” that will be beyond the scope of their local needs, and it will bless others.  They averaged 190 in the last month of the summer (lya 174), and had 7 people to baptize before they even announced it!  PTL!

The last Sunday of September, Joanne and I were with Pastor Jacob & Nikki Ebbett at Havelock, NB Wesleyan.  There were 45-50 people who gathered for worship.  Pastor Jacob has passion to reach the lost.  The people were warm in their greeting, and receptive to the Word of God.

Pastor Ryan Farrell shares that it was a great day at Nackawic Wesleyan on September 23rd.  There were 90 in church (lya 58) as they celebrated the 10th “Well Walk” in their church’s history.  This is a packed out crowd in this sanctuary!  The congregation walked from the church to the local Lion’s Club.  The local fire department led the way for the walkers, and the RCMP followed.  30 wells have been dug in 9 years through the financial efforts of this church, and to date they have raised $4,600 toward a target of five wells this year.  It was a great day of celebration to be sure, and we commend you for helping to make a difference in the world.

New Pastors Orientation 2012:  Last week I spent a day with the pastors that are new to the District, or new to their particular current responsibilities.  We had 12 pastors join us – 8 lead pastors and 4 staff pastors- as well as five others who were presenters that joined me in an orientation session.  It was great to interact with these leaders and catch their passion for the world and their local churches.  Thanks to those who were participants, and to those who were presenters.

Rev. Lawrence Corey: Rev. Lawrence Corey passed away at the Carleton Manor, Woodstock, NB on September 27th at the age of 85.  His funeral service was held on Monday, October 1st, from the Woodstock Wesleyan Church.  Rev. Dale MacDonald officiated, assisted by Rev. Mel Norton, and the DS brought remarks on behalf of the Atlantic District.  There were 35 ministers present, and with the spouses who were able to attend the number from the Atlantic District ministerial ranks was over 40.  Interment was held Tuesday, October 2nd, at the Havelock, NB Wesleyan Cemetery with Pastor Jacob Ebbett conducting the burial service.

Due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease, Lawrence retired from active ministry in 1990.  He and Mary served the following churches: Londonderry, NS (1954-1959); Bristol, Gordonsville, Glassville, NB (1959-1964); Hartland, Lower Brighton, Victoria Corner, NB (1964-1968); North Head, NB (1968-1971); Havelock, NS (1971-1976); Royalton, Bloomfield, NB (1976-1986); Seal Cove, NB (1986-1990).

The Coreys retired to Canaan, NB (near Havelock, NB).  It was only in recent years that Lawrence became a resident of Carleton Manor.  We extend our condolences to Lawrence’s wife, Mary, and to the entire family in their recent loss.  Please remember them in your prayers.

Albert “Bert” Boyd passed away at the age of 84 on October 6, 2012, and his funeral was held at Miramichi Wesleyan Church on October 10th.  Pastor Gary Churchill officiated.  Bert and his wife, Helen, lived in the Hampton, NB area for quite a few years.  They impacted a lot of young lives, several associated with Bethany Bible College. The Boyds were active members at Kings Valley for a number of years, and then six years ago felt led to move to Miramichi.  They became an important part of Miramichi Wesleyan.  Bert will be greatly missed.  He is survived by his wife, Helen, four children, and a parcel of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  His daughter, Lorraine, is married to Rev. Thurland Brown, formerly from the Atlantic District and now pastoring in Winchester, ON.  Bert’s granddaughter, Cathy, is married to Rev. Peter Hayes, and they pastor the Havelock, NS Wesleyan Church.  Our prayers are with the family and we extend our condolences to them.

Linda Lamos, District Director of Children’s Ministry, was very pleased with the Fall 2012 HUDDLE held at Presque Isle Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 15th. There were many positive comments from the 98 participants about the speakers and the breakout sessions.  Vaughn Martin (Easton), Debbie Rooney (Presque Isle) and their team of volunteers went all out for this event.  The food and hospitality was top notch!  Children’s workers from other denominations besides the Wesleyans attended as well.  Plans are in the works for a Huddle in the Fredericton, NB area at the end of March, and then one in Nova Scotia in April.  Details will follow as the time draws closer.  Thanks to Linda, Vaughn, Debbie, and everyone else who contributed to this last HUDDLE event.

Follow 2012: The Wesleyan Youth International Convention will be held in Louisville, KY, December 28-31, 2012.  District Director of Youth Ministries, Scott Rhyno, and Pastor Jeremy MacDonald, Moncton Wesleyan, want you to be aware of the following – Wesleyan High School students from across North America will be gathering in Kentucky this December for Follow 2012. The Atlantic District has chartered a bus for any students or youth leaders interested.  Cost is $450 per person and confirmation is needed by November 2.  The $450 Includes: Transportation, Lodging, Breakfast and Conference tickets. It does not include lunch and supper.  If you would like more information on how you or one of your students can jump on the bus you can email Lindsay Cann at lcann@monctonwesleyan.com or call her at 506-857-2293.  For details on the event itself go to http://www.mywycon.com/index.html

Dr. Dave & Jane Higle moved to Indianapolis on Sept. 11th to begin their new ministry responsibilities.  They were both employed at Kingswood University for the past 11 years.  In their new roles, Dave is a Director in the Education and Clergy Development Division at Wesleyan World Headquarters. While he will be working with educational and ordination issues, his initial and primary responsibility is clergy care issues.  Jane will be working with the archives of The Wesleyan Church.  Dave’s ministerial credentials will remain in the Atlantic District.  We wish both Dave & Jane the very best in their new roles.

Beulah Camp Water – Those who do not have “winter water” at Beulah may be wondering when the seasonal water will be shut off.  Beulah Caretaker, Bruce Cheney, has set a start date of Monday, October 15th for the process to begin, and plans to have it completed by October 19thAlso note that the electricity to all trailer park areas will be shut off at that time.

The aftermath effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being feltby Wesleyans along the east coast.  Recovery efforts from the storm will extend for weeks and possibly months.  I sent information to our pastors last weekend on how churches or individuals could participate if they wished to make a donation to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.  Initial questions or requests for more information about Wesleyan relief efforts should be directed to the Communication office at The Wesleyan Church Headquarters.  For further information, e-mail communications@wesleyan.org or call 317.774.7907.

The Wesleyan Church has launched a global prayer initiative entitled “called2pray.”  The purpose is to call The Wesleyan Church to be a movement of prayer around the world that would seek to hear God’s voice and focus on missional priorities.  This isn’t a case of the “West praying for the Rest.” It really is all of us praying for all of us.  The goal is barrier breaking prayer that leads to a global harvest of evangelism and church planting.  You can be part of this.  For more information, or to register, go to the website at www.called2pray.com

Halifax-Deep Water celebrated their 5th Birthday this past weekend (November 4)!  They have grown from an average of 55 in their first year to an average of 223 in the last church fiscal year.  They had 357 people attend the birthday celebration which was held at the Dalhousie University SUB.  Pastor AJ Thomas’s message was about “The Bride of Christ,” and it ended with an actual wedding!  Carmen Howard and Jarrod Peckham were married by Pastor AJ in the service.  It was very powerful day that Deep Water won’t soon forget!  Everyone enjoyed a piece of wedding cake following the service.  Most importantly, two people stood to receive Christ at the end of the message.  Earlier in the service, I brought greetings on behalf of the District, and also presented Pastor AJ with a gift of $5,000 from the District to help Deep Water move forward in accomplishing their vision to reach the downtown area of Halifax, and beyond.

Lead Pastor L.D. Buckingham reports that Moncton Wesleyan held three services the weekend of October 6-7, and 3,068 people attended the “Heaven is For Real” ministry event that was held with Rev. Todd Burpo.

Senior Pastor Bud Fancy shares that 57 men attended the annual Presque Isle Wesleyan (PIWC) Men’s Prayer Summit the first weekend in October.  They had 630 in church that same weekend (lya 553).  On another note, PIWC recently sent 20 people – 10 men and 10 women – to La Gonave, Haiti for 8 days.  Pastor Bud led the Team.  He said they got caught in Hurricane Sandy, and experienced 25 inches of rain in 36 hours!  They had a wild time getting to the mainland.  They rented 2 “fly” boats (20 ft. speed boats, each with three 75 hp motors) and traveled 12 miles of open ocean at full speed in 6-8 ft. waves to get to the mainland.  Pastor Bud says “they were literally skipping on the waves, pretty hairy!”  It was a great trip with an excellent team.  God truly helped, and good ministry happened.

Pastor Gary Churchill, Miramichi Wesleyan, reported recently that one of their ladies led her neighbour to Christ, and she and her three girls were in church the next Sunday.  Right after that, one of their men led a co-worker to Christ.  Miramichi’s average attendance has been up every month since May.  The last Sunday in September they had 85 people present, which is up 25-30 over their normal attendance.

Pastor Ryan Farrell reports that Nackawic Wesleyan has raised to date $6,195 to dig wells.  There were 66 present in the morning service, October 14th (lya 58).

Beulah/Browns Flat Fellowship served over 200 turkey dinners on Canadian Thanksgiving Monday.  The proceeds went to The Fortress Ministry in Swaziland.  $3,800 was raised!

Senior Pastor Dave Wilcox, Yarmouth Wesleyan, shares good news from his neck of the woods.  Recently they baptized six individuals – three adults, one teen, and two children.  One of the adults was in her 80’s!  It was a great day!  Yarmouth Wesleyan is next to the new high school and the kids have been walking through the church property to get to the local eateries for lunch.  They decided to mow a path through the field to make it easier for them, and have set up picnic tables to give them a place to eat.  The feedback is that this has meant a lot to the students.  Last year, Youth Pastor Kyle Belden started having Mac & Cheese on Mondays in his apartment as a way to connect with the teens.  They are now having it in the church building.  On October 22nd they hosted 112 teens and went through 48 boxes of Mac & Cheese!  Pastor Kyle set up the gym and opened the youth room.  To use an overused word, it is an “awesome” outreach.  It gives these young people a chance to experience the church in a non-threatening way.

New Mayor: Municipal elections were recently held in the Yarmouth area, and the new mayor of Yarmouth is Pam Mood who happens to be a member of the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church.  Several of the Atlantic District churches may be familiar with her as she is also a motivational speaker, and has spoken in some of our churches. It is a good thing for God’s people to be involved in the political arena in their communities, as God directs.

Pastor Bill Lea shares that West Head Wesleyan’s fall ministries are doing well.  Over 40 children registered for their mid-week program, and then several more started after October 14th.  West Head has had four people give their lives to the Lord this year so far, and they baptized five people in the ocean on Canadian Thanksgiving Sunday (October 7th).  Pastor Bill says it was great to stand in the water and count about 65 people on the shore in support (lya 89).  The Sunday School is a very strong ministry and outreach in this church, and their high this year so far was 140 (lya in S.S. = 128).  New people are attending their services and the pastor is encouraged with the steady growth.  God is amazing!

Pastor Scott Lewis, Lower Hainesville Wesleyan shares that they had a great weekend recently (Oct. 18-21).  On that Friday, 16 young people attended the youth group.  On Saturday they held an auction at the Upper Hainesville Hall and they raised just over $1000 dollars to help the church out this winter.  Sunday, they had a baby dedication and there were 47 people in church, giving Pastor Scott, as he puts it, “another chance to plant seeds by preaching the gospel of salvation.”

Good things are happening at Amherst Wesleyan Church (AWC).  Pastor Raymond Fancy shares that on October 21st they held their 4th annual Music Night in support of the local Foodbank.  All the area churches were invited, along with the community, and over 300 people packed into their sanctuary.  Nine different musical groups participated, ranging from the AWC Praise Team, church choirs, men’s choirs, and even the local elementary school children’s choir.  The event raised over $1,200 in cash for the Foodbank and in addition collected a “truckload” of groceries estimated to be valued at over $2,500.  It was a great community effort with a great spirit present in the service.

Pastor AJ Plaizier reports that Fredericton-Corbett Ave. Wesleyan had an encouraging Sunday this past weekend!  For the first time since AJ assumed the Senior Pastor responsibilities they broke through the “300 barrier.”  There were 310 people in church – 103 in the first service, and 207 in the second service.

Truro – Central Nova had 95 in church on October 21st (lya 89).  Ken Banks is the Lead Pastor.  I was privileged to be with them on this Sunday and preach the message.  Several upgrades to the building have taken place in the last several months.  They have installed an elevator, and painted and remodeled the lobby.  Downstairs they have installed new flooring, redone the nursery, and also painted.  It is brighter and much more inviting.  The Local Board is working with Church Solutions as they make plans for the future.

Sydney, NS – New Roots has been meeting at the Holiday Inn (formerly the Delta Hotel).  I was present on October 28th when they held their last service in the Hotel.  Beginning November 4th, they started holding their services in Sydney’s Empire Theatre Complex on Prince Street.  This will be a good move for them visibility-wise.  Most people in town know where the theatre is, and it’s in a well-travelled area.  Pastors Darren & Janel Clark moved to Sydney from Newfoundland this past summer.  They both now have jobs and are helping Pastor Kevin & Laura Myers with this work, which has been a real encouragement.  Continue to keep New Roots in your prayers.

Pastor Denn Guptill is our new DDGP and makes the following requests: “As your new DDGP (District Director of Global Partners) I am just getting my feet wet and finding my way around the position.  It would be great if each church could send me the contact info for their missions point person.  As well, we are putting together a website www.gpatlantic.ca where updates and information about all of our Atlantic District GP Personnel can be found. As part of that we would like to partner with area churches to promote their short- term trips.  We will post info about your trip and whether or not there are opportunities for folks from other churches to take part.  The site can also be used when you need a specific skill for a short term team.”  For more information please contact me at denn@gpatlantic.ca

Houghton College President Dr. Shirley A. Mullen has been named one of Christianity Today’s “50 Women You Should Know” for her outstanding role in shaping the evangelical church culture. President Mullen receives this honor along with the General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church, Dr. Jo Anne Lyon.  In addition, suchwell-known women as Beth Moore, Joyce Meyer, Condoleezza Rice and Sarah Palin were also cited.  The “50 Women You Should Know” article appeared as the cover story of CT’s October 2012 issue. Author Sarah Pulliam Bailey writes that these women are “profoundly shaping the evangelical church and North American society.”  Dr. Mullen is a native of Nova Scotia, and is the daughter of Rev. Laurence and Vesta Mullen.

Houghton College will open two new locations in Niagara County for their Adult Education Program in 2013.  The first location to open will be in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and classes will begin on January 16, 2013.  The second location will be in Lockport, N.Y., and classes will begin in the summer of 2013.

The Board of Trustees of Kingswood University bestowed upon Dr. L.D. Buckingham the title, Trustee Emeritus, in their recent meeting in OctoberPastor Buckingham tendered his resignation having served on the Kingswood Board of Trustees for 35 years (1977-2012).  He is only the third person in the university’s 67 year history to be given this honour.

Kingswood University staff and students are benefiting from the new PotashCorp Civic Centre.  Built on land donated by Kingswood University, the year-round fitness and pool facility is adjacent to the university and houses a fitness centre, an indoor aquatic facility that includes a therapy pool, and a track for walking or jogging. It serves the greater Sussex area.  After eighteen years of dialogue, the long-awaited, official opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of the PotashCorp Civic Centre was held on Friday, October 19.  Several government leaders were on hand to speak at the ceremony, and Kingswood board members, staff, and students had the privilege of attending the ceremony.  All Kingswood students have memberships and are able to take full advantage of all the benefits the PotashCorp Civic Centre brings to the community.

This year’s Atlantic District Ministerial will be held on January 24-25, 2013 (Thursday, Friday).  It’s an all-day event on Thursday, and we will conclude a little before noon on Friday.  Kings Valley hosted us last year, and graciously invited us back again this year.  Our speaker is Dr. Keith Drury, an Associate Professor of Religion at Indiana Wesleyan University where he has taught since 1996.  Previously, he spent more than twenty years (1971-1988, 1990-1996) in denominational leadership for The Wesleyan Church, and has served as a local church pastor.  As a writer he is prolific, and his blog engages pastors and church leaders on a variety of popular and scholarly ministry topics.  This time together will be practical, helpful, and refreshing!  Information has gone out to our ministry personnel, and also to the vice chairs of our local congregations.

Havelock, NS Wesleyan worshipped in their new church building for the first time this past Sunday (Dec. 9th).  Pastor Peter Hayes says it was a great service with 134 people in attendance (lya 80).  The official dedication date is yet to be announced.  It will most likely be in the spring when the weather is more conducive for such an event.

Fredericton Crosspoint has had an incredible fall.  They’ve been over 500 on 7 different occasions, and broke a record with 560 just recently!  They have averaged 502 over the past 3 months.  Co-Pastor Mark Brewer says, “This is uncharted territory for Crosspoint; very exciting!”

Fredericton Journey (formerly First) had a celebratory service on November 25th in honour of the recent $600,000 major remodeling of their sanctuary and lobby.  There were 437 people present (lya 291).  The new theatre seating holds 482.  This is an excellent upgrade and the congregation is to be commended.  Matthew Maxwell is the Lead Pastor.

The Kings Valley Wesleyan Church LBA (Quispamsis, NB) has unanimously recommended to their congregation that Associate Pastor, Rev. Brent Ingersoll serve as the next Lead Pastor of KVWC.  The pastoral vote will be held this Sunday, December 16th, and will be conducted by the District Superintendent.

Audrey McElhinney, wife of Rev. John McElhinney, and mother of Pastor Dave McElhinney, Lead Pastor at River Valley Wesleyan in Grand Bay-Westfield, passed away this afternoon at 2 pm.  A service celebrating her life will be held this Sunday, Dec. 16th, at 4 PM at River Valley Wesleyan, 45 Ridge Way, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB.  A second service will be held on Monday, Dec. 17th, at 6 PM from the Britton Funeral Home in Hartland, NB.  There is no visitation but people will have opportunity to greet the family following both services.  Please continue to keep Pastor John and Pastor Dave, and all of the family in your prayers.  Thank you.

In two weeks, thousands of teens will descend on Louisville, KY for Follow 2012, the International Wesleyan Youth Convention.  The dates are December 28-31, 2012.  There are over 30 young people from the Atlantic District who will be getting on a bus on December 26th to make their way to what will be a life-changing event for hundreds of teens.  Both the Atlantic District and Kingswood University have put significant dollars toward underwriting the cost of the bus in order to keep the overall cost to our teens at a more manageable level.  Special thanks to Rev. Scott Rhyno and his Team for their leadership with this.  Scott is the Atlantic District Director of Youth Ministries.

January is Sanctity of Human life Month.  It’s a great time to show October Baby in your church.  October Baby is a 2012 American Christian-themed dramatic film directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin and starring Rachel Hendrix in her film debut. It is the story of a young woman named Hannah, who learns that she was almost aborted as a baby in the womb. She then embarks upon a road trip to understand the circumstances of her birth.  Google October Baby if you’d like more information.

Jesus Film in Cuba:  In a recent GP Netcaster it was reported that the team in Cuba has been busy with six showings of the film in October/November.  Seventy-four people gave their hearts to the Lord in those meetings.  We’re grateful for these doors that are opening.  The Atlantic District has a partnership with The Wesleyan Churches in Cuba.

West Head Wesleyan recently held their annual Fisherman’s Service.  This year they had 212 in attendance (LYA 180).  Pastor Bill Lea felt the Holy Spirit definitely leading him and at the close of his message he says, “You could have heard a pin drop.”  God spoke to the hearts of dozens of men and women who, up to that point, did not have a relationship with the Lord.  Pastor Bill invited people forward for prayer, and the front of the church was filled.  God still moves when His people are obedient and tell His story, and He still changes lives!  PTL!

This year was the 40 th Anniversary of Moncton Wesleyan’s Living Christmas Tree (LCT).  It was announced that this would be the last year for this particular Christmas emphasis at MWC.  The 7 performances sold out for a combined attendance of 12,400 people, the largest ever for this event.  317 people indicated their decision to receive Christ into their lives.  Pastor LD Buckingham is the Lead Pastor.  Associate Pastor Don Ingersoll directed the LCT.

Amherst Wesleyan (AWC) Dessert Theatre:  AWC hosted a wonderful dessert theatre on 4 different evenings that saw 311 people attend.  90% of the people in attendance were community contacts, meaning they don’t call AWC their church home!  In addition, around 60 people from AWC were involved in one way or another, which represents 70% of their AM attendance!  Raymond Fancy is the pastor.

Short Term Missions Trips:  If your local church is planning on sending a team or teams on a short-term missions trip to a Global Partners field, then registering them with GP adds an extra level of security for the members.  For more information, contact our District Director of GP, Pastor Denn Guptill at denn@gpatlantic.ca

Elizabeth Rhyno, Director of Worship at Kingswood University, shares thatthis year’s ENGAGE event, held this past October, saw 19 churches from 5 denominations in 15 cities represented among the participants! ENGAGE is a weekend event for worship leaders, worship planners and pastors.  This was the second annual event, launched and hosted by Elizabeth Rhyno.  Mark your calendars for next year’s ENGAGE: October 18th-19th, 2013.  Guests will include songwriter Jennie Lee Riddle (Revelation Song, When the Stars Burn Down) and Micah Kephart of Poetice International.

For those of you who have or will be going south, the Annual Atlantic District Snowbird Breakfast is scheduled for 8:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2013 in Brooksville, FL at the Golden Corral Restaurant.  It’s been a couple of years since we had the last one, so we are looking forward to connecting with you this January.  The breakfast is for those of you who have connections with the Atlantic District (AD) but have chosen to “escape” to a warmer clime for the winter months.  In the past, the AD has treated you to breakfast at this event but over the years the crowd has grown, and this has become a substantial expense.  However, with that said, have we got a deal for you!!  We do want to see you, and this breakfast is always a wonderful time for everyone to connect, and for me to update you on things that are happening back home in the District.  You will be responsible to purchase your own breakfast for less than ten dollars.  For every person who attends the breakfast, the district will give $10 to Global Partners (over and above any of our current commitments) to assist with the Jesus Film.  For every $10, 25 people will hear the Gospel and 10 will respond in some way, many giving their lives to Christ.  That, my friends, is a good deal!  Arnold Hayes has graciously volunteered to look after the local logistics.  So, if you’re planning to attend let Arnold know.  You can reach him at aghayes@nbnet.nb.ca or (352) 540-9185.  Put the date on your schedule.  See you then!

The next Under Sail will come your way after mid-January, 2013.

Joanne and I wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

There have been many Kingdom gains across our churches in the last 4-5 weeks.  Several of our churches reported record attendances for Christmas events and Christmas Eve services, baptisms, and people coming to know the Lord.  These were wonderful opportunities to share the Gospel with folks that don’t necessarily attend church every week.  Here are a few snippets from across the last few weeks (in no particular order):

  • On Sunday, January 20th, Lead Pastor Brent Ingersoll shares that Kings Valley Wesleyan baptized 38 people and had 21 people saved!
  • Pastor Peter Hayes, Havelock, NS Wesleyan, shares that they hosted their first Christmas program in their new church building on Christmas Sunday (December 23).  There were 279 present in the service (lya 80)*.
  • On December 16th Pastor AJ Thomas reports that Halifax-Deep Water baptized seven people, and eight people gave their lives to Christ.  This past Sunday (January 27th) they baptized another five people!
  • Pastor Mark Brewer told me yesterday that Fredericton-Crosspoint is still growing, their attendance is now consistently north of 500, and they are planning their next baptism service for Easter.

Lower Brighton Wesleyan Church celebrated their 120th Anniversary on February 10th.  The church is 139 years old but has been part of what is now the Atlantic District for the last 120 years.  Several former pastors took part over the course of the weekend: Ken Banks, Raymond Fancy, and Kevin Myers (his father, Richard Myers, was a former pastor).  Pastors Carl & Evelyn Brewer led a special evening of music on Saturday evening (Feb. 9), and 63 people showed up in a snowstorm! They received an impromptu offering for the Wesleyan Churches in Mozambique that have been impacted by severe flooding.  The offering totaled $207 and change!  On Sunday morning, as part of a presentation that honoured former pastors, Pastor Glen McVicar presented Church Planter Kevin Myers with $520 for Sydney – New Roots that the congregation had received in a special offering two weeks previous.  I brought greetings and congratulations on behalf of the District in the Sunday morning service.

Nova Scotia Travels: This past Thursday, I sat in on a meeting with Pastor AJ Thomas and the Halifax-Deep Water Leadership Team as they discussed exciting possibilities that will help them expand their church’s ministry and reach more people in the Halifax downtown area.  Friday morning, I had breakfast with ten of our Halifax area lead and staff pastors.  It was great to hear encouraging stories from each of them on how God is changing lives and working in their churches.

MiramichiPastor Gary Churchill shared with me recently that two people were saved in the service on Feb. 24th.

conard-stairs

Rev. Conard E. Stairs – Retired minister, Rev. Conard Stairs, passed away February 13th at York Care Centre in Fredericton, NB.  He taught at Bethany Bible College (now Kingswood University), and also served as Principal of the High School Department for a short time.  He was ordained in July, 1950 in a service in the Meductic Church.  In the fall of 1950 he began teaching in the Kingswood theology department, and so served the College for four years (1949-1953).  He left the College to go into the pastorate.  He has pastored Reformed Baptist and Wesleyan Churches in Truro (1953-1959, 1984-1985); Salem/Killam’s Mills (1965-1966); Doaktown (1970-1973); Trenton, ON (1973-1978); and Presque Isle, ME (1978-1983). Rev. Stairs was the President of Kingswood University (then Bethany Bible College) from 1959-1969.  He had a passion to see this institution grow and develop. He promoted it tirelessly, and helped it achieve a higher level of financial stability.  It was during this period that the relocation of the College from Yarmouth to Sussex took place.  President Stairs was instrumental in helping the 4-year degree granting program in Bible and Religion become reality.  It was implemented in the fall of 1970.  His funeral was held from Fredericton Corbett Ave Wesleyan Church on February 18th, officiated by Rev. Pete Thomas.

ucUta Chase – Retired veteran missionary Uta Chase died February 16th at York Care Centre in Fredericton, NB.  She was 90 years of age.  She served the Reformed Baptist Church and The Wesleyan Church in South Africa, Rhodesia, and Zambia beginning in the 1950’s up through the late 1970’s.  Her overseas ministry was interspersed with periods of service on the staff at Kingswood University.  She left a legacy in the lives of the African people she ministered to, both physically and spiritually; she left a legacy in the lives of the students who were at the College the years she served there.  Her funeral was held at Fredericton Journey Wesleyan Church on February 20th. Rev. Pete Thomas was the officiating minister.

I was present at both of these funerals and was privileged to bring remarks on behalf of the Atlantic District.

Numbers are benchmarks; the only fair comparison is to compare yourself with yourself.  It is encouraging to see the growth, and the new connections that are being made with families in the communities where our churches minister.

EASTER WEEKEND AROUND THE DISTRICT:

Amherst (Raymond Fancy): 85 present in our Good Friday Service, and 105 present in our Sunday morning Easter Service (lya 85).  We held our first ever Easter Egg hunt with 40 participants.  In both the Good Friday and Easter services, there was an overwhelming sense of God’s presence!

Bangor-River City (Steve Sinclair): 76 were in attendance (lya 51), and 28 new people as guests from an Easter outreach.

Dartmouth-Hillside (Jay Guptill): Attendance was 197 (lya 160), number saved 2, number baptized 1.

Florenceville-Bristol Trinity (Graham Perry): We had 130 in the service (lya 102).  We challenged people to forgive or be forgiven as this has been a very difficult year in our church.  Over 25 people raised their hands in asking for forgiveness.

Fredericton-Corbett Ave (AJ Plaizier): What a great weekend!  We had 295 people in church, 2 baptisms and 6 people gave their life to Christ!  We give God the thanks for all of this – He draws people to Himself, He saves, and He sustains!

Fredericton-Crosspoint (Mark Brewer & Conard Symonds): 715 in attendance (lya 464), 10 saved, and 7 baptized.  This is an attendance record for Crosspoint by about 145 people.  The offering was $36,000, which is also a record by about $9,000.  There were also 139 kids in attendance for a huge Easter Egg hunt – the most kids ever for this event!  One little guy got saved that morning and walked upstairs to be baptized!

Halifax-Deep Water (AJ Thomas): 347 in attendance (lya 223), and 4 baptisms.

 Hammonds Plains-Cornerstone (Denn Guptill): Easter Sunday – 394 (lya 270); Good Friday – 220.

Houlton (Wayne Robertson): A total of 461 (lya 265) for the morning, and two people saved this past week.

 Ingomar-Faith (David Hockley):  Attendance: 61 (lya 39); Baptisms: 3!

Jonesport (Rich Thomas): 57 showed up for the Easter breakfast, about 20 more than last year.  There were several first time visitors.  100 people were present in the Sunday morning service (lya 43).

Maple Ridge (Nick Graham): Easter Sunday was a celebration with 6 baptisms, and 202 in church (lya 124).  Since last Easter, Maple Ridge has baptized 26 people, and had 9 salvations!

Moncton (L.D. Buckingham & Tim Guptill):  It was by far the largest weekend in MWC’s history.  They created 3 unique events to share the gospel with as many people as possible: 4500 pancakes flipped on Saturday and Sunday mornings. 221 salvations, 5100 in attendance (lya 1768), and $65,300 in the offering.

Nackawic (Ryan Farrell): We had 62 in attendance for our Good Friday service.  We also had 62 in attendance for our Easter morning service (lya 58).

Presque Isle (Bud Fancy): The Easter attendance was 947 (lya 553), 1 saved, 1 baptized, and $21,000 in the offering.

Quispamsis-Kings Valley (Brent Ingersoll): 1118 in attendance (lya 748).  The previous record attendance was 905, and last year’s Easter attendance was in the 800s. We did no special marketing or series. People just came. We baptized 23, and there were 8 first time decisions.

Sussex (Rob MacCallum):  334 Easter Sunday morning (lya 241); 4 salvations and 4 rededications; Good Friday last year – 56; this year 116.

Truro (Ken Banks): 132 in attendance (lya 89); 3 people came forward to accept Jesus, and 2 people were baptized – one planned and the other spontaneous.

Westchester (Linda Fillmore): A wonderful Easter weekend!! In 2 services they had a total attendance of 73, 11 of which were first time attenders (lya 25)!  One of the ladies taking part in the Easter program gave her heart to the Lord!

West Head (Bill Lea): We had a great weekend in West Head. 100 attended the Good Friday service, and in our two Sunday services we had a combined attendance of 330 (lya 89). God is good!

Life change is happening across the District!  The numbers are just indicators of connections to people.  The most important numbers are the salvations and baptisms.  They appear as “numbers” here, but in their local settings, they have names and faces…and now changed hearts!  The good news is that 15,776 people worshipped in our churches this past Easter (up 4,594 over the previous year), 271 people crossed the line of faith and gave their lives to Christ (up 183 over last year), and 64 people were baptized (an increase of 14 over last year).  PTL!

Marvelous weekend in the HRM. Individual meetings with Denn Guptill, Mike Zottarelli, Kevin Wilson, Jay and Sharon Guptill and AJ and Kelli Thomas – a great crew committed to Christ and the Cause. Encouragement and optimism on all fronts.

Organizational service and morning worship at Deep Water – quite a day – PTL! Received 49 members; held their first LCC; extended a unanimous call to AJ; elected their first LBA and delegate to district conference and approved the budget – all in about 35 minutes. Inspirational service followed with circa 250 in attendance – and I picked up about 15 new followers on Twitter…. @HCWilsonATL

Thanks for keeping the LeRoys on your regular prayer list. They are in Edmonton this week visiting with Jonathan and his family.

Dale MacDonald and I were in Indy this past week to a Symposium on Ministerial Training. It involved DS’s, DBMD Chairs and theological profs from our universities. Good interaction and some helpful take aways.

Big event on June 23. A Retirement Celebration for LD and Lois Buckingham will be held in Moncton with LD preaching his farewell message at 10 AM and an Open House reception from 2-4 in the afternoon. I plan to be there and I know a number of you will be present also for this capstone celebration of 44 years of ministry in Moncton.

Peter Hayes was at Crosspoint yesterday as an Assistant Pastor candidate; a new Executive Pastor – Dale Betts – was introduced at Moncton; KV saw 3 saved, 15 baptized and the vision for KVEast was launched; Maple Ridge heard a challenge to burn their plows; John Symonds preached at Corbett; Rob McDowell’s last Sunday at Easton; Good day at SJ1……

How do I know all this? Twitter. Frequent communication is a deeply felt need for many. Twitter is one way to keep in touch with our tribe. Pastors, you may want to join the conversation. You will find me at @HCWilsonATL.

Had an excellent meeting this week with the Brown’s Flat Advisory Group and Worship Committee and also attended Posie Ingersoll’s funeral. I regret that I was unable to attend the funeral of John Corey who served faithfully and with distinction on our DBMD for several years.

Kingswood annual Golf Classic was held on Saturday. More than 26K was raised on a beautiful day of great fun and fellowship. Congrats all around!

Big event this coming Sunday, the 23rd. A Retirement Celebration for LD and Lois Buckingham will be held in Moncton with LD preaching his farewell message at 10 AM and an Open House reception from 2-4 in the afternoon.

Pastor Mike Zottareili at Lower Sackville Crossroads held their first baptism in 7 years today and topped it off with communion. Well done.

The Camp Board had a very positive meeting this week on Caton’s. A highlight was a walking tour to view firsthand the projects underway, especially the partially completed two story wash house and chapel.

Gloria and I attended the funeral of Clinton Guptill at our North Head church on Saturday. His sons Rob and Tim delivered the eulogy and message and they both did a truly outstanding job. Our sympathy is extended to Judy, Andrea, Rob, Tim and the extended family.

Moncton had an incredible day today, the 16th. They held an outdoor baptism right on their property with three portable pools, a sound stage and seating for 1000+ set up. They saw 101 people baptized. Simply outstanding.

There are a couple of staff pastor appointments in the works – public word by next week.

Jonesport and Bangor Pathway still in pastoral search. Thanks for praying. Working leads.

Stats are all in. Good year with several increases. More word at District Conference.

Lower Hainesville is gearing for outdoor services this summer. They need a couple of speakers and wire. If you have some on hand that are not being used, why not drop an email to Pastor Scott Lewis at Irhnsvlwes@hotmail.com.

Starting this week and continuing for the summer, with the exception of the Beulah Family Camp weeks, the District Offices at Moncton and Beulah will be on a four-day work week, Monday – Thursday. Both offices will be closed on Fridays. Email, Text, Twitter and cell phone will, as always, be available 24/7.

Beulah VBS, Jr. VBS, TeenTrac and Mixed Golf Event pre-registrations are available online for the first time. Registration forms are on the Beulah Camp website.

Greetings all!

Staff changes are in the wind and many of you may already know about all of this – but to keep the info loop complete and in good working order, please note:

Peter Hayes has accepted a position as Assistant Pastor at Crosspoint.

Tim Long will be assisting at Havelock, NS on a part-time basis.

Kathy Shanks has accepted the Children’s Pastor position at Fredericton Journey. She will also be employed on a special contract basis at UNB.

Mel Norton had his farewell service at Hartland today and baptized 6 last Sunday.

Stefan Gilbert is speaking at the Calvary Baptist Graduation ceremony tonight in Lockeport.

Beulah Family Camp gets under way a week from Friday. The program people have put a winning program together; the speakers are prayed up and focused; the worship leaders are pumped and I trust you will be a part of those days.

You can pre-register for events at Beulah this year – Jr. VBS, VBS and the golf outing. Go to the Beulah Camp site and click on Family Camp and then follow the links. Another example of seeking to serve you better.

Had good visits this week with A J Plaizier, Matt Maxwell, Matt Palmer, Mark Brewer and briefly with Jamie Cambers while I was in Freddy for a DBMD sub-committee meeting that included Dale MacDonald and Mel Norton. It is great to get out and about and rub shoulders with the tribe.

sj1 (Saint John First) honoured 8 graduates in their service this AM and 3 were baptized at Woodstock.

I will be operating out of the Beulah office for much of the summer starting this week. Both offices will be open Mon-Thurs until Labour Day except for the two full-throttle weeks when Beulah is fully operational. During those two weeks, only the Beulah office will be open and it will be a Mon-Sat schedule.

Massive celebration at Moncton this AM as LDB wound up 44 years of ministry there. A number of interesting elements were a part of the packed house service including his farewell sermon. The Mayor was present and spoke and I was honoured to be asked to speak and to pray the prayer of succession as the baton was passed from LDB to Pastor Tim.

A gift of a cruise for the extended family – LDB, Lois, their children and grandchildren was a marvelous expression of appreciation for the longest pastoral appointment in our district history.

Beulah Camp 2013 kicks off this week. Anticipating a great camp. Many activity options offered. Practical preaching. Inspiring worship. Great fellowship. And, by faith, good weather:) Last chance to pre-register for Jr. VBS, VBS and golf outing.

District Conference will be on July 11 and Ordination on July 12. As you can see, preparation is in high gear. These will be important days together.

Maple Ridge has VBS materials available for sale. If interested, contact mrselizabethjoy@gmail.com.

I will be in the Central Canada District on Friday and Saturday of this week under assignment from our General Superintendent. I will be chairing their District Conference and officiating at the Ordination Service. I will be on site at Beulah late Saturday night, DV.

I spent two days this week in the Central Canada District where I chaired their District Conference and officiated at the Ordination Service. I was doing so on assignment from our General Superintendent.  There are quite a number there with Atlantic roots including two of our military Chaplains – Capt. Ray Smith, Royal Canadian Army and Lt. Brandon Melanson, Royal Canadian Navy.

DS Don Hodgins retired after 18 years in office and Dr. Peter Rigby was elected. He had been pastoring our church in Kingston, ON.

Mark Savary has been appointed Director of Youth Ministry at Halifax Metro.

KV recently held their VBS and had 350 kids present for the 4 day camp. There were at least 12 decisions for Christ and some 100 volunteers staffed the VBS.

Fredericton Journey recently celebrated “The Church Has Left the Building.” – 7 teams  conducted a service at a senior’s home; had BBQ at three city parks; handed out free pizza downtown; helped a family move and served at a soup kitchen. Another team stayed at the church and provided a prayer covering. Circa 100 volunteers served about 415 people.

Riverside Camp begins its 2013 season in just a week’s time. Check out their schedule at www.riversidewesleyancampground.com. I visited Riverside last Sunday and the grounds are looking good – well prepped and ready for campers.

Beulah 2013 kicked off on Friday in the midst of a real heat wave. The camp runs through next Sunday with District Conference on Thursday and Ordination on Friday. Deep appreciation is expressed to the many volunteers who helped get the grounds ready for camp.
