Yesterday was the second Sunday of Advent. I trust wherever you worshipped yesterday, much was made of Jesus.

Our General Superintendent will be in the district this week for a meeting with the DBA in Fredericton on Thursday and Friday.  There will be many items of significance to be determined and a major focus of the meeting will be the process of selection/election of a District Superintendent at District Conference in 2014. On Thursday morning, prior to the beginning of the DBA meeting, Dr Lyon will accompany me on visits to our three Fredericton churches.

Truro celebrated their 65th Anniversary yesterday with former pastor Denn Guptill as special speaker. The church was founded by 1948 by Rev. N. E. Trafton. This year is also the 25th Anniversary of the dedication of their present building which was built when Denn was the pastor. They also hosted a banquet and a sold out “Evening of Christmas Music” on Saturday evening. Congrats all around.

Fredericton Crosspoint has received a special white offering each year for several years to help to brighten the Christmas of a member of our tribe as well as an overseas worker.  Last week they raised more than $3,000 for this purpose – well done. An idea other churches could adopt without doubt – it truly is more blessed to give than to receive.

Last year our Mount Pearl Solid Rock church prayed on every street in their city and marked the street on a city map.  When all the streets had been visited, the map was laminated. Last week Pastor Stuart Marples and two members of the church represented the group at a city council meeting where the map was presented  to the mayor and council. They were very well received by the mayor and council. Another creative example of community connection.

Hammonds Plains Cornerstone baptized 12 candidates last week. Baptisms are an undeniable testimony to new life in Christ. PTL!

I met with the LBA at Maple Ridge last week as we work through the major physical challenge facing Pastor Nick Graham.  Excellent meeting with a very good outcome for the next several weeks. Thanks to Assistant Pastor Mike Agrell for stepping up to shoulder extra responsibilities during this season. Please continue to be in prayer for Nick, his family, Mike, the church and for God’s hand to be active in this situation. Nick will be in Halifax for extensive further testing in mid January.

The district office staff and spouses shared a Christmas lunch together last week.  It was a very enjoyable time and a bit unique to have both a former and present DS at the office staff lunch.

Head of Millstream recently held a Community Christmas Banquet in the local rec centre. This was a very stretching event for the church which only averaged 12 in worship last year and had 53 at the banquet at which Pastor Vince Robertson shared a 7 minute gospel message. Attendance this fall is running in the 20’s – close to 100% increase. Go Vince!

Gloria and I were at Bangor Pathway yesterday morning for worship and I also met with the LBA. Tony Stevens is serving as pulpit supply presently and Pathway will be in the search process for a pastor during the normal cycle in the spring.

Gloria and I dropped in to visit our dear friends, Conard and Debby Symonds, on our way back from Bangor. The entire pastoral staff and spouses from Crosspoint came by to sing a Christmas carol and offer prayer. It was a special moment for all.

THOT:  “I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say.  Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.”  -  Nelson Mandela

Yesterday was the third Sunday of Advent – the day for the shepherds’ candle. I trust you are enjoying this marvellous season of the year – let’s never lose awareness of the Presence in the midst of the presents.

Rev. Conard Symonds was promoted to glory on Friday of last week. The Celebration Service for him will take place on Wednesday of this week at 2 PM at Crosspoint Wesleyan in Fredericton. Visitation is at the church on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-9. Pastors/ministers please check your inbox for an email with further details.

On Tuesday evening last week, Gloria and I were honoured to host a Christmas dinner for our camp staff at Up to Par in Midland. We enjoyed an excellent meal together with Dean and Carol Stephenson, Bruce and Roxie Cheney, Rob and Marti Trafton, and Phillip and Emma Hayes. These folk do great work for which we are all thankful.

Last Sunday there were 23 first time decisions for Christ through the ministries of KV, some of which came to the Master at the KVEast location. Already the multi-site ministry is seeing true Kingdom growth. PTL and onward and upward.

I received a tweet during the week from a lady in the Monctonchurch referring to last Sundays services as real “game changers” for those who accepted Christ.

World Hope Canada has been promoting a Christmas Eve offering for the last few years focusing on their overseas ministry. World Hope is doing great Kingdom work. Check out their video at www.vimeo.com/79209696.

Snowbirds take note. The annual Atlantic Snowbirds Breakfast will take place on Saturday, Feb 1, 2014 at the Country Kitchen in Brooksville at 9 AM.  Gloria and I will be honoured to host this event and all who attend will be guests of our district.  We will be receiving an offering, the proceeds of which will help fund the Jesus Film, the most effective evangelistic tool in the history of Christianity. See many of you there.

Our own Dr. Nancy Nason-Clark  (Fredericton Journey) was recently presented with the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Foundation award given annually to individuals, groups or organizations that have contributed significantly to the prevention and elimination of family violence in Canada. Nancy is recognized for her work as one of the country’s leading family violence researchers in connection with faith-based organizations. Congratulations Dr. Nason-Clark.

The DBA met for two days in Fredericton last week with our GS Dr. Lyon present throughout. We met at the Crowne Plaza Lord Beaverbrook Hotel. The agenda was full with special attention given to the DS search/selection process looking toward election at District Conference in July. More detail will be openly provided as the process moves forward.

We enjoyed an evening concert in The Playhouse with Frank Mills of Music Box Dancer fame. As seen above, we closed out our meeting with lunch in the Old York County Court House, specifically in the old holding cell :).

Be in prayer for the DS selection/election process that the Master’s will be both understood and followed in this vital matter.

Yesterday was the fourth Sunday of Advent – the angel candle or love candle on the Advent wreath – “God so loved, that He gave….”

Stefan and Deb Gilbert have a new daughter, Lyra Nadine, their third, born on Saturday morning at 3:44 AM and weighing in at 8.2. Congrats and PTL for safe arrival. Denn and Angela Guptill are the proud grands.

IMA continues to grow. The last two weeks have seen new records, both in % opened and actual numbers opened. Very pleased it is enjoying favour across and beyond our tribe.

This past Thursday, the Moncton Christian Academy held their annual Christmas program. MCA has a strong and positive ministry and Willie Brownlee serves with dedication in leadership.

Early notice on a World Vision Leaders Forum that will be held in Halifax on April 3rd.  The cost will be $25 – check it out - churchleaderforums.ca

Nick Graham has received details on his week in Halifax in January for further tests and consultation relative to liver transplant surgery. Karen Cooney is facing disc replacement surgery in her neck early next year. Please keep both Nick and Karen on your prayer list – thanks in advance.

New Hope Valley have prepared Christmas boxes for families in need in their area. Another example of the joy of giving and of touching your community.

An overflow crowd attended the Celebration Service for Conard Symonds on Wednesday at Crosspoint. His brother John and I were honoured to tag team the sermon. More than 40 of our ministers were present with regrets from some 25 more who were unable to be present due to weather.

The district office will be open until noon tomorrow – Tuesday – and then will be closed the remainder of the week for the Christmas break. Karrilee and Joanne join Gloria and me in wishing all of you a very special and meaningful Christmas.

A new year dawns this week. The year is new. The mission is not. The methods may change.  The message will not. The future in uncertain. The faith is not. The pressures may multiply. The Presence is magnificent. Take heart. Be encouraged. As the Brits coined in their WW II phrase, Be Calm and Carry On!

While we were enjoying a white Christmas here at home, Robin White, our GP (Global Partners)  missionary to Japan, was observing the birth of Christ half way around the world. Thanks to Robin and all the GPers who represent and present the Master in so many locations.

In spite of the challenges of winter storms, we had a number of very positive and creative reports of services on Christmas Eve (24th) or on Christmas Eve Eve (23rd). Crosspoint met in the Fredericton Convention Centre and Kings Valley met in the Imperial Theatre in Saint John. Very good reports from Maple Ridge, TruroCornerstone and Moncton.

A wonderful Christmas gift came to Kingswood University this year with the receipt of an unexpected gift of $500,000 to apply to the reduction of the chapel debt. This generous and welcome gift is deeply appreciated. Sincere appreciation is expressed to the donors and and a heart-felt PTL is offered up to the Master.

Cornerstone Wesleyan in Hammonds Plains had a special Christmas project to raise funds for the purpose of drilling fresh water wells in Sierra Leone. Their goal was $6000 to drill two wells. The offering totalled over $10,000 – 3 wells +. Great response. Congrats! Christmas is about giving and what could be more appropriate than giving to make a real difference in the lives of people we do not know but who are in genuine need.

Gloria and I will be on vacation for the first two weeks of January. I will be checking email once daily and please feel free to be in touch in this manner as required. Thanks for being patient as response time will be a bit slower than normal. Karrilee will have information at the district office on how to contact me in case of emergency.

We are the PEOPLE OF GOD committed to the PURPOSE OF GOD believing in the PROVIDENCE OF GOD and relying on the POWER OF GOD

Gloria and I are enjoying a vacation break but our hearts, thoughts and prayers turn to the district every day. We will be back home on Jan 13th DV. As stated last week, I am checking email once daily and you are totally free to contact me as required.

Havelock, NS held their special Christmas program on Sunday night, Dec 29th. There were 275 present for an evening with high community impact and response. Well done.

During the recent power outage due to freezing rain that left parts of New Brunswick without power for as long as eight days, KV fed some of the linesmen who were working in their area. Hats off to Kim Clarke and the ladies who seized this opportunity for “a cup of cold water” ministry.

The General Superintendent will be back in our district in mid February as she and the DBA move forward on the DS search and selection process. This is a matter of high significance and your prayers for wisdom are requested. We all have our opinions but I believe the Master has a plan. This we must seek. Thanks for praying.

The Jonesport church held a Christmas drama last Sunday night with the title Hark the Angel Sang Off Key. Great participation and community response. Hats off to the Jonesport crew.

Dean Stephenson is presently leading a crew of 17 on a mission trip to Haiti. The team is made of Caton’s Island alumni and they are involved in a variety of ministry and camp training opportunities. Thanks to Dean for his passion for Haiti and for Carl and Maya Gilles who are hosting the team.

Gloria turned 70 last week and Troy, Lisa, Kristi and I took her out for a very nice dinner to celebrate. She has been a great blessing to me and a true partner in ministry across these years.

THOT: Thanks to Brian Dodd for this posting – Innovative Leaders:

Gloria and I will complete a very relaxing floating vacation today and plan to be back in the office tomorrow – Tuesday. It has been great to have this break and I am looking forward to being back in the saddle as we face the very busy and demanding spring season in district life. This is the time of pastoral recall and search. Please pray for His will and way in these things as it is both needed and requested.

Across our district we have recently seen winter’s fury in action with heavy snow, freezing rain and Arctic air. For several days, Beulah was without electricity. Our hats are off to Bruce and Roxie Cheney and all who assisted them in so many ways during those days. There was no damage to district properties at Beulah and great effort was expended to protect our assets there. The experience also served to help us identify more complete preparations that we can make in anticipation of future outages of this kind.

AJ Thomas resigned yesterday as Lead Pastor at Deep Water in Halifax. I have been in communication with their Vice Chair and will be working with the church leadership as a new pastor is selected. AJ and Kelly are seeking the Master’s direction for their next ministry assignment, and while I cannot speak for God :), that assignment must surely be here in our district.

Maximizing Impact is a program that will concentrate on churches that have unrealized potential and are led by leaders with untapped potential. These churches will, with LBA buy-in, do an extensive self-study leading up to a Consultation Weekend under the direction of an outside consultant. The entire process is aimed at Maximizing Impact of the church. Our pilot project is Corbett Ave where I have met with the Lead Pastor and then later with their LBA, which unanimously approved the concept. They have completed the self-study and the Consultation Weekend is coming up in early February. Be watching for reports and opportunities for other churches to be involved.

A couple of weeks ago I asked you to remember Nick Graham and Karen Cooney in prayer as they face serious physical challenges.  Karen had surgery last week and Nick is facing extensive tests and surgery preparation sessions this week in Halifax.  Please continue to pray. Thanks.

Beulah 2014 snippet to wet your pallet for more…..

Luella Marie Clark arrived safe and sound on Jan 3 weighing in at 9.12. Darren and Janel are the proud parents and Jaelyn welcomes a little sister.

Exhale ’14, Moncton Wesleyan’s 1/2 day Ladies Conference is scheduled for Sat, Feb 1st from 9:30 -1:30, featuring Kathy Shanks and Janet Ingersoll. Lynnette Mason, wife of Dave Mason, Creative Arts Pastor at KV, was involved in a horrific car accident on Jan 11th.  She sustained very serious injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. Our prayers are with Lynnette, Dave and their children Landon and Lyla.

Kingswood University is organizing a tour of Israel on May 13-20, 2014, Led by Dr. Wilbur Williams, Stephen Elliott and Bruce Fawcett. Check out  the details of this faith-inspiring tour.

The GS will be on the district on Feb 12 as she and the DBA interview two candidates for the DS position. The survey that was done soon after I stepped into this season of leadership a few months ago, has provided helpful information and opinion from our ministerial tribe as candidates were considered.  The GS has signed off on using those survey results in lieu of conducting a further survey at this time. Please continue in prayer for His way and will to be realized in this significant matter.

Joanne LeRoy will conclude her service in the district office at the end of this month. Her love for Christ and the district is obvious and her willing spirit has been appreciated by me during these months.  Given the current work load, we will not be replacing her at this time.

Jamin Melanson has received word that his R1 visa for entry to the US has been approved. This process has been ongoing for more than 7 months. He will now be able to assume his pastoral duties at Fort Fairfield.

New midweek kids program at Moncton running for 10 weeks kicked off last week. Two of our grandkids – Mya and Grady – were there and loved it!

This past weekend I was in Yarmouth for an LBA meeting (pastoral search); at Havelock, NS for the morning service and Advisory Committee meeting (next steps consideration) and at Shelburne for a congregational meeting (where we are, regrettably, discontinuing services).

Willo Ann Symonds has been in hospital for a week as doctors isolate an infection she is suffering. Gloria and I were able to visit her in the Yarmouth hospital on Saturday.

Deep Water’s North St location is ready to go. Looks great and it is a stirring example of redemption – bringing the building back to its original purpose. Onward and upward.

Snowbirds take note. The annual Atlantic Snowbirds Breakfast will take place this Saturday, Feb 1, 2014 at the Country Kitchen in Brooksville at 9 AM. Gloria and I will be honoured to host this event and all who attend will be guests of our district.  We will be receiving an offering, the proceeds of which will help fund the Jesus Film, the most effective evangelistic tool in the history of Christianity. KU #1 Save the Date – April 1 and 2 at Kingswood. Rev. Steve DeNeff and Dr. Lenny Lucetti will be leading a “Festival on Preaching.” This two-day event will feature seminars from them and several other preaching experts.  Additionally, several Emerging Young Preachers will receive personal coaching to help develop their homiletical skills. Details to follow.

KU #2  As reported earlier, over the Christmas season, Kingswood received $500,000 in two gifts to reduce the chapel debt.  Very recently the University received a further $100,000 to be applied against the debt – $600,000 in a month.  PTL!

We presently have a Missions Team in Cuba. The team comes from three of our churches and is led by Rev. Rod Guptill. Have you been on a Mission Trip recently? At least three opportunities will be unveiled at Beulah 2014.

As mentioned last week, services have been discontinued at Shelburne Hope Wesleyan. This is a sad reality and our prayers are with the Gilberts and the small remaining remnant at Shelburne. Pastor Stefan Gilbert will be serving as part-time Assistant Pastor at West Head for the next several months as well as caring for wrap up duties at Shelburne. The district intends to retain the church and parsonage for a possible relaunch at a later date.

On Monday morning of last week, I met with two of the Leadership Team (LT) from Deep Water as we begin their first journey down the pastoral transition road. Solid guys with great hearts for ministry. I will be meeting with their full LT soon.

Our sympathy is extended to Mrs. Elsie Kent (Rev. Ole) on the passing of her brother Stanley Perry. Stan was a part of our New Hope Valley church in Kentville.

Gloria and I will be in Florida all of this week returning on Monday, Feb 3rd. We will be attending the annual DS/GS Institute as well as hosting the Snowbirds Breakfast (SB) on Saturday. We began the SB at least a decade ago and it is great to see the interest and connections this event fosters.

Every year all of our DS’s meet with the GS for the DS Institute.  That meeting for 2014 was held at the Buena Vista Sheraton Resort in Orlando last week. This year, the Institute also included the Global Partners Leadership Team, District Directors of Global Partners (DDGP) and some Missions Pastors. Great days together. In addition to Gloria and me, our district was represented by Denn Guptill, our DDGP and Greg Hanson, Missions Pastor at Kings Valley. The peer learning, network building, vision casting, inspiring speakers and Kingdom camaraderie made this a great time together.  Oh yes, we also ate together as the pic above shows.

We also ate together at our annual Atlantic District Snowbirds Breakfast held at the Country Kitchen in Brooksville on Saturday morning. Some 65 were present for what has become a district highlight event for many over the past decade. In addition to the warm fellowship, district life update and renewing of acquaintances, the group gave more than $3,300 in support of the Jesus Film through Global Partners. Appreciation is expressed to Arnold and Georgina Hayes for their help with advance logistics for the breakfast.

February is a very active month as we process pastoral searches, recall votes and extended call reviews. It is the Master’s will and way that we week. Please focus prayer for wisdom and guidance on the month which has these schedule items on my calendar:

1 – Snowbirds Breakfast
5 – Deep Water Leadership Team
7-9 Corbett Ave Maximizing Impact Weekend
10 – Camp Board
11 – Maple Ridge LBA
12 – DBA with Dr. Lyon
16 – Reserved
17 – Digby LBA
18 – Crosspoint LBA
19 – Scarborough Coastal LBA
23 – Fort Fairfield Pastoral Installation
24 – Moncton LBA
25-26 DBMD meetings

Exhale Women’s Day at Moncton on Saturday “sold out” with 225 ladies present. Onward and upward!

Rob MacCallum resigned yesterday as Lead Pastor at Sussex after 8 years of service there, 6 as Lead Pastor. Add Sussex and the MacCallums to your prayer list.

Thanks for your prayers for Nick Graham. After several days of intense testing and interaction with the transplant team, Nick has received word that while a transplant will be necessary, it will not take place in the immediate short term. Continue to pray as this matter unfolds – pray for him as he is in frequent discomfort; for his family; for the church on the Ridge and for wisdom for all of us as we move forward together

Last Sunday just after our arrival in our Orlando hotel, Gloria was checking her Facebook and discovered that the Collingsworth Family was in concert that night at a large church in the area.  The GPS indicated the church was 40 minutes away and the service was to begin in about an hour, so we headed out. What a marvellous evening! There were perhaps 2000 people there and the inspiration was over the top. We spoke with Phil and Kim following and they have warm and surprisingly accurate memories of their visit to Beulah several years ago.

Maximizing Impact was mentioned in IMA three weeks ago. Our pilot will launch this coming weekend at Corbett Ave with consultant Rev. Paul James, DS in Eastern NY New England, on site for the weekend. Keep watching for updates and possibilities for other churches to become involved.

It’s Monday Again (IMA) hit another new record last week with the largest number of opens ever.  New subscribers signing up every week. The tribe is staying connected.

A great day in Yarmouth yesterday. Six were baptized early in the service and six more “walk ons” later in the service. One man remarked, “I’ve never seen anything like that in all my life.” Biggest crowd in quite some time – 454. PTL and onward and upward!

Mission teams from our tribe are headed to Guatemala and Nicaragua this month. It is great to see such a high level of interest in the Great Commission. Have you been on a team? Watch for word on upcoming teams at Beulah 2014.

Maximizing Impact weekend was held this weekend at Corbett Avenue with consultant Rev. W Paul James, DS of Eastern New York New England. We were involved in individual staff and LBA interviews, group feedback session, teaching seminar and Sunday worship. We prepared and shared a report outlining 5 Strengths; 5 Concerns and 5 Prescriptions growing out of our interviews and interactions.

KVEast set a new record today of 131 in the theatre.  Our first satellite venue is getting it done. PTL.

Great participation and strong positive response from the three days together. Thanks to Pastor AJ Plaizier for his high level cooperation and to all who took part in the weekend. This has great potential for several of our district churches. I will be back at Corbett on Feb. 28 to meet with the LBA for a follow up meeting.

129aTo the great people of the Atlantic District of the Wesleyan Church, thank you for your prayers and passion concerning  the future of the Wesleyan Church and the Kingdom of God even beyond the borders of the Atlantic District. You have been steady through this journey of leadership transition in the past year. You continue to faithfully support Dave and Joanne Leroy in their journey of faith and healing and we are all grateful.

It has been my privilege to work with the excellent District Board of Administration you elected to guide the District at every level. The past several months I have had the privilege to meet with the DBA several times. This past Wednesday was the day we interviewed candidates for the District Superintendent position. It was a good day and one in which we sought God’s guidance at every phase of the discussion.

I am happy to announce to you that at the end of the day a unanimous decision was reached to extend to Dr. H.C. Wilson the nomination as the District Superintendent of the Atlantic District for a 4 year term. We believe God is doing a “new thing” in all the leaders and that there is a “new day” for the Atlantic District.

We started the day with the words from the Psalmist: “O Lord, grant us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.“ (Psalm 116:25-26)

We saw God work and look forward to the future.

Blessings -
Jo Anne Lyon

drwilsonGreetings!  As I sincerely stated in the DBA meeting, I am honoured and humbled by your unanimous ballot vote to nominate me forward to the District Conference for a four-year term. Thank you for that vote of confidence – deeply appreciated.

After prayer and seeking counsel from those I truly trust, I enthusiastically accept your nomination and look forward to a ministry season unparalleled in the life of our district. I recognize that election does not take place until July and I am already chomping at the bit and will need to guard against appearing presumptuous. Truly looking forward to the future – onward and upward.

As we discussed, a change in district structure and personnel is a track we are all excited to travel together. I will have a truly amazing piece of info to share with you soon and seek your affirming response. A couple of conversations must precede this, but keep watching. Onward and upward.

It is a great privilege to be asked to serve in one’s home district. I can hardly wait…

He is risen!

So what now you may wonder. A few thoughts:

Be watching next week for the very positive announcement mentioned in my note above. Don’t miss it.

twc_new

Be in prayer during these months leading up to District Conference and Camp as we consider how Made New will be far more than a denominational slogan in the life of our district.

Our reality is a bit unique. I now serve you as Interim DS and at the same time, have been nominated to become DS upon District Conference election. To move forward with plans and future ministry trajectory seems a bit presumptuous prior to being formally elected. On the other hand, to only deal with routine matters and not seize these months between now and District Conference to dream, plan, pray and embrace future possibilities seems irresponsible. Pray for wisdom. I deeply need His help and your understanding.

Did I mention there will be a significant announcement in the next It’s Monday Again?

Questions/comments/observations are welcome. Please feel free to be in contact at any time.

Watch for next week’s announcement.

A renovation project is underway at the District office that will provide us with a board/conference room.  One of our tenants vacated their office suite and we have taken over a portion of that space and it is being converted. Having our own board/committee/small group space will be a very positive addition to our office and provide meeting flexibility and convenience we have not had previously. The work should be completed by early in March.

The 2014 Federal Budget was introduced in Parliament yesterday, and it contained a number of new measures that will impact charities. Many of these developments are welcome, including proposed funding for infrastructure to allow charities to electronically file their annual information returns for the first time, and more flexible rules surrounding the tax treatment of charitable gifts made by will.

For CCCC’s detailed analysis of these and other new provisions proposed in the budget, click here.

I met yesterday by Skype with the Leadership Team at Deep Water as we move forward with the first pastoral search in their brief history. Great unity and synergy in the group. We had two earlier meetings snowed out…

I sent the following tweet on Tuesday of last week, “Excellent board meeting in Maple Ridge tonight. Strong support for Pastors Nick and Mike. Very proud of great attitude of board members.”

Jacob Ebbett is turning 30 and his wife Nikki is hosting a “surprise” birthday party for him this coming Saturday the 22nd from 2-4 at the Havelock Memorial Hall – best wishes only. Greetings to Jake can be sent to nikkiebbett@gmail.com

Kingswood University will be holding an Apologetics Conference on February 21 at 7 p.m. & February 22 from 9 a.m. to noon in Wesley Hall. World renown theologian, Dr. Craig Evans, plus two of his colleagues, from Acadia Divinity College, will discuss Did Jesus Believe He was Divine? by Dr. Craig Evans, The Burial and Resurrection of Jesus: Myth or History? by Mr. Greg Monette, and Response to New Atheism by Dr. Anna Robbins. There is no charge for this event and everyone is welcome. For further details, please refer to an email that was sent out earlier or call Mrs. Eileen Gavel at 506.432.4429.

Last night I met with the LBA at Sussex Wesleyan. It was a productive meeting discussing the future leadership possibilities and direction of the church.

THOT: The Hudson Bay Company newsletter issued in February 1924 outlined the eight commandments of salesmanship:

  • Being agreeable
  • Knowing your goods
  • Not arguing
  • Making things plain
  • Telling the truth
  • Being dependable
  • Remembering names and faces
  • Thinking of success

Great list for our tribe. Amazingly valid 90 years after first appearing. Onward and upward!

Special-Announcement

The response to last week’s announcement concerning my nomination to serve as your DS for the coming term has been over-the-top and both surprising and humbling. Within 48 hours, I received, by actual count, over 100 contacts – emails, personal visits, tweets, text messages and phone calls – offering congratulations and amazing affirmation.  I was overwhelmed by the volume and nature of the responses and felt unworthy and grateful for the support all at the same time. Your amazing response deepens my resolve to serve you to the absolute best of my capability. But not alone.

With the support of the GS and our DBA, we will be recommending to the district conference that the Assistant District Superintendent position become a full-time appointment. The district conference would create the position and the DBA would fill it based on my recommendation as DS.

In positive anticipation of this action and with GS and DBA support, I have asked Rev. Peter Moore to accept this position and he has agreed – PTL! I cannot express to you how positive this development is for our district and for the Kingdom. Peter and I worked closely together here on the district in times past and for 5 years he served with great skill as Director of Operations at Global Partners during my tenure as General Director.

This development gives a new thrust and powerful dynamic to our moving onward and upward! Like a teenager waiting for months to pass so they will be able to get a drivers license, I can hardly wait for summer to arrive and the ministry future that will follow.  And now a word from Peter..

Ellen joins me in expressing how honoured we feel regarding our potential return to the Atlantic District pending action by the District Conference this July.  My subsequent acceptance of Dr. HC’s offer to serve as your Assistant District Superintendent will open the door for us to return home with our three girls (Mallory – 16, Julia – 13, & Shorey – 7) after serving the International Wesleyan Church through Global Partners for the past seven years.  After watching our family grow in faith and friendship in the heartland of this great country, we find ourselves on the verge of coming back home with a deep sense of peace in God’s timing and direction.  Home, as they say, is where the heart is – and while our daughters identify deeply with the Hoosier midwest, our hearts as parents have never strayed far from our Canadian roots and family.  Serving once again alongside Dr. HC & Gloria provides an unexpected blessing for our family and we look forward to sharing in the very best days of God’s plan for the Atlantic District with each of you in the years ahead.

With His hope,
Peter

Last Saturday, Dr David Smith from KU taught at a men’s breakfast at the university attended by more than 50 men. These men represented several denominations and a number of our area churches. Extremely positive response and more similar events to follow.

Great week last week as I met with local leaders in a number of churches where the pastoral arrangement is up for review or where there is a pastoral transition. Lots of kilometres but what excellent people to work with for the sake of the Kingdom.

Along the way, I also broke bread (or drank coffee) with John Symonds, Charles and Ruby Bain, Ben Medal, Mel Norton, Steve Sinclair, Andrew Maves and David and Laura Zigler and their charming daughters.

Sussex - unanimous vote to interview a potential candidate this week.

Digby - unanimous renewal of Andrew Maves extended call.

Crosspoint - unanimous recommendation that Mark Brewer be given an extended call.

Coastal - unanimous recommendation that David Zigler be given an extended call.

Deep Water - unanimous vote to interview a potential candidate this week.

Yesterday I was privileged to install Jamin Melanson as the new pastor in Fort Fairfield. It has taken him some time to obtain US Immigration clearance, hence the out-of-pattern timing of his installation. We also shared communion together and had a meeting of the Advisory Committee.  There is a sense of new life at the Fort – PTL.

Moncton held an Alpha Weekend over the last few days. A solid program that builds both disciples and faith communities. Have you had Alpha in your church yet?

IMA hit another new record for number of opens the week of Feb 10th. Since New Years, 47 new readers have subscribed.

DBMD (District Board of Ministerial Development) will be interviewing ministerial students and ordination candidates on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week at KU. Prayer requested for this vital task.

The first day of spring is later this month. It’s not here yet, but it is coming! Keep calm and carry on.

News Notes from last week:

  • Received word that David LeRoy has been approved for a stem cell transplant procedure. Great news! The procedure will occur later this spring, quite likely in April.
  • Met with Moncton LBA on Monday night. They unanimously recommended an extended call for Lead Pastor Tim Guptill.
  • Sussex LBA interviewed a pastoral candidate on Thursday – more word soon.
  • Deep Water interviewed a pastoral candidate on Monday – more word soon.
  • Met with Yarmouth LBA on Saturday afternoon to discuss pastoral matters going forward – more word soon.
  • Truro team home safely from missions trip to Nicaragua.
  • Crosspoint team left for mission trip in Haiti.
  • Fredericton Journey team left for mission trip in Dominican Republic.
  • Pastor Bud Fancy underwent successful surgery in Portland.
  • Dartmouth Hillside is considering acquiring the Forest Hills United Church which is closing and  which would provide amazing opportunities for broadened ministry.
  • Met with Advisory Committee in Havelock, NS on Saturday evening and considered future pastoral arrangements – more word soon.
  • It’s Monday Again continues on the grow.  More new subscribers in February than any other month.
  • Met with Corbett LBA on Friday evening as a follow up to our Maximizing Impact weekend earlier in February. Strong buy-in of the plan. Exciting possibilities. Onward and upward!
  • Shared in District Board of Ministerial Development (DBMD) meetings in Sussex on Tuesday and Wednesday. Interviewed candidates for two days with more interviews to follow this month in Woodstock and Hammonds Plains. The tribe is growing in both numbers and quality. Stoked!
  • More praise items on hand with pics but space is gone for this week. Check back on next IMA. God is on the move in our tribe – onward and upward.

SPECIAL NOTE: We are in the midst of an office renovation that will provide us with a board/conference room for the first time. A part of this project includes re-carpeting of the office suite, which will be completed the end of this week or the first of next.  This will require the moving of all furniture and equipment which will result in limited office function for a couple of days.

While laptops and cell phones will be up and going, the office phones, computer and printer will be down or intermittent at best for a day or two. Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

Five babies were dedicated by Pastor Nick Graham at Maple Ridge last Sunday. This is a great testimony to new life on the Ridge both physical and spiritual. Congrats.

It’s Monday Again (IMA) was opened last month by people in nine different countries. Onward and upward.

It was announced in Yarmouth yesterday that their LBA is unanimously recommending John Symonds as Lead Pastor for a two-year term with a membership vote to be taken later this month. Yarmouth is in a growth season and this is a very positive step by their leaders.

ukraine

We all agonize over the deep struggle in Ukraine and what that may all mean on the broader world scene. World Hope Canada (WHC) has long-standing ministry in the country located in and near Odessa. Kerry and Carole Allison have served there with distinction for several years and the Country Director for WHC has visited Beulah in the past. Please hold this vital ministry up in prayer.

Lent began last week – March 5th and concludes on April 15th. While Lent observation and focus is not part of our historic practise, the concept of self-sacrifice/self-denial has deep Biblical significance. Are you considering some form of self-denial leading up to the great sacrifice we will celebrate over Easter?

Amherst has a mission team en route to Haiti and what better launch could there be than corporate prayer from the home team. The number of mission teams from our district is expanding and I could not be more pleased. We will celebrate Great Commission ministry thrust at Beulah 2014 – don’t miss it.

Gloria and I were at KVEast yesterday morning. Great to be in the first “one church in two locations” ministry of our district. Congrats to Pastor Brent and his crew. Yesterday morning set a new attendance record at KVEast – 193. Deep Water is now also a two-site church and Hillside is looking at a second location as I mentioned in last week’s IMA. This trend will expand going forward – keep tuned.

Yesterday we were privileged to share in a buffet dinner at Chateau de Champlain in Saint John. It was great to see Jack and Charlene MacKenzie and Art Ingersoll who are residents there. Walter and Margo Perry hosted us and we also saw John McElhinney and others who were guests for dinner.

Hillside Rally Unite was a blast! Over 100 students attended. They participated in workshops that taught a variety of skills and served the local communities of Cole Harbour, Dartmouth and Halifax. – Michael Fearnley, Pastor of Student Ministries.

Office renos are ongoing and this week will see the temporary activity and connection  restrictions I mentioned last week.  Bell Aliant will be on site today to work on phone and internet lines and I expect limited connectivity will result. Carpet installation is also expected early in the week – so we will be a bit off balance this week. Thanks for your patience. Cell phones, email and twitter will be up and running.

Charles Bain and Tim Long resigned at Havelock, NS yesterday effective at Beulah time. They both have served with excellence during this season and I deeply appreciate their willingness to serve Christ and the church for this conference year.

Our GS Dr. Lyon was recently in Japan for the Annual Conference there. Our own Robin White was in attendance along with other missionaries, complete with their chopsticks. The Wesleyan Church has a long and strong shared ministry with Immanuel General Mission in Japan.

I chaired a Local Church Conference in Moncton yesterday convened for the purpose of voting on Lead Pastor Tim Guptill who is completing his initial two-year term there. The church gave him a strong extended call which he accepted.

Fredericton Crosspoint gave a strong extended call to their Lead Pastor Mark Brewer who is also completing his initial term in the Lead Pastor role. They voted following the morning services yesterday and Pastor Mark accepted their call.

Great meeting of the KU board last week. We received the incredible news that the debt on the Irving Saunders Chapel has been paid in full! While many contributed to the project across the years, the amazing generosity of JK and Jean Irving was such a blessing that made retirement of the debt possible. As well, President Gorveatte, who is completing his initial four-year term, was unanimously reelected to a new four-year term. It was a meeting of high praise and celebration… and we were given new KU scarves as you can see above.

News Bullets

  • Sussex held an interview with a potential candidate last week – more news soon.
  • Halifax Deep Water had Jon and Erin Stephens as special guests over this past weekend.
  • Ben Medel has accepted a full time position as Student Ministries Pastor at Hammonds Plains Cornerstone.
  • David Zigler received a unanimous extended call last Sunday at Scarborough Coastal.
  • Dartmouth Hillside has a mission team in Haiti and Fredericton Crosspoint has a mission team in Bolivia.
  • Yarmouth extended a near-unanimous call to John Symonds for a two-year term as Lead Pastor which he has accepted.
  • Liz Hoyt has accepted a full time position as Childrens Pastor at Moncton.
  • I met with the LBA at Grand Bay River Valley last week to review Pastor Dave McElhinney’s extended call. The board voted unanimously to renew the call.
  • Office renos are nearly complete. Waiting on some furniture items. Should be back to “normal” by week’s end.

The Buckingham Leadership Institute is off to an amazing start and promises to fill a very significant role in leadership development and local church health. The advisory board on which I am honoured to serve met last Friday evening. The members present included leaders who are Baptist, Presbyterian, Pentecostal Assemblies and Wesleyan. Great synergy and network building. Onward and upward.

I was privileged last week to spend a day of consultation chaired by our General Superintendent and involving two other DS’s – Paul James from Eastern New York/New England and Wayne Wager from Central New York.

Our District Board of Ministerial Development (DBMD) spent last Monday interviewing candidates from NS as we met at Cornerstone. These are always highlight days for me as we interface with the rising leaders of our tribe. The DBMD meets again today in Woodstock to spend time with candidates from the “north.”

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Dartmouth Hillside is considering the acquisition of a second facility. Last week I had opportunity with Pastor Jay and Joe Sollows, a layman at Hillside and an old friend since childhood, to view the facility. Many hurdles still ahead, but great Kingdom possibility.

Great idea for fiscal reporting and openness from KV. Check out the KV Financial - Spring 2014. Thanks to Greg Hanson for his good work on this item.

David LeRoy has received confirmation from the VGH that he has been approved for a stem cell transplant and the procedure is scheduled for mid-April. This is great news and we rejoice with the LeRoys. Thanks for keeping Dave and Joanne in your focused prayers.

Our new board room was inaugurated last week with its first use being our DBA meeting on Friday. Having this space now available for various board, committee and other meetings is a great addition to our district office operation. We continue to wait on the delivery of some furniture pieces to complete our renos, but we are fully up and running. When you are in this neck of the woods, feel free to drop by and check out our renovated digs

Congrats to Rich and Katie Thomas whose adoption of Riley was completed last week. Also our warm best wishes to the new grandparents Steve and Nancy Sinclair.

Deep Water extended a near unanimous initial call to Jon Stephens yesterday to become their new Lead Pastor. He has accepted and we are so pleased to have Jon and Erin joining our tribe and returning home to this significant assignment.  Welcome! Jon has roots at KV and Erin’s roots are at Hillside.

Last Sunday was a high day at Yarmouth as some 22 people made first time commitments to Christ. Several others made recommitments in what Pastor John described as one of the greatest days of impact in his ministry. Gloria and I were pleased to share dinner with John and Willo Ann on Saturday evening.

I was at Havelock, NS yesterday morning as we continue to work with the church during this time of transition. I have such deep appreciation for the shared leadership of Charles Bain and Tim Long during this church year.

KV held a baptism last Sunday at the Saint John Aquatic Centre and baptized five new believers. All of these people are products of the KVEast multi-site initiative that was launched in the Cineplex Theatre in east Saint John a few months ago. Multi-site works! PTL and onward and upward.

April is the last month of our church year. Sincere thanks to the vast majority of our pastors who are leading their churches to be full participants in paying their USF. Together we are all stronger. Is your church up to date? If not, this is the time. Onward and upward.

WKFM (Wesleyan Kids for Missions) at Lower Brighton under the leadership of Eleanor McVicar decided to adopt the Pineapple Project in Sierra Leone, West Africa as their project. The project helps farmers in Sierra Leone begin or expand their growing of pineapples which has very positive family income outcomes.  The kids at Lower Brighton set $180 as their objective and then their work ethic and creative juices kicked in and they raised $425! Incredible. Congrats!

THOT: Thanks to Brian Dodd for the following 7 Practises of Growing Churches

  1. Growing churches focus on church health more than church growth.
  2. Growing churches demand excellence.
  3. Growing churches are vigilant about their mission, vision and core values.
  4. Growing churches ruthlessly stop doing unproductive ministries.
  5. Growing churches identify, spotlight and leverage their top producers.
  6. Growing churches not only embrace change but foster change.
  7. Growing churches celebrate.

We are the People of God committed to the Purpose of God believing in the Providence of God and relying on the Power of God.

The Festival on Preaching was held at Kingswood last week. It was a time of instruction and inspiration; of listening and learning; of message and methods. Steve DeNeff and Lenny Luchetti were our keynote speakers and presented powerfully. In addition to our tribe pictured above, the Atlantic Baptists were well represented and their Executive Minister Peter Reid was one of the presenters. Other groups were also represented at this exceptional event. Thanks to Kingswood for hosting the Festival. Visit the Kingswood website to find the notes and presentations from the Festival.

A few choice quotes from the Festival:

  • Authority in preaching is not a home run.  It is a batting average.
  • Nothing succeeds like content in a sermon. There is no good way to say nothing.
  • Novelty is not what is needed. Depth is what is needed.
  • If ego is not crucified, your ministry will be.
  • How do we reach out to this present age without selling out to this present age?
  • Sermons are not microwaveable – they are crockpots.
  • Pity the one who speaks magnificently about the meaningless.

Met last week with Rob Trafton to discuss various matters relative to Beulah and Caton’s for this summer. There will be a follow up meeting this week also involving Scott Rhyno. Watch IMA for more detail coming soon.

2014 Beulah Overview – PDF

Don Ingersoll will be candidating for the Lead Pastor position in Sussex next Sunday, the 13th. Watch for a report soon.

I was on an assignment for two days last week in the US with former General Superintendent Dr. Harry Wood. He and I were first involved in ministry together in Wesleyan Youth leadership in the 70′s. What tremendous value there is in long- term shared ministry with a trusted colleague.

Yesterday there was a guest from Swaziland at Saint John First for a World Hope presentation; a baptism at Moncton; a new attenders luncheon at Crosspoint; new sermon series at Sussex; a sermon on submission at Deep Water; positive reinforcement of volunteers at KVEast. How do I know these things? Twitter. Pastors, if you are not tweeting, sign up and share praise notes that I can then share in IMA. Inspiring all round. Onward and upward!

THOT:  Three things the leader must not delegate from Eric Geiger:

  1. Clarity of Identity – are our beliefs and values explicitly clear and understood by the people?
  2. Clarity of Direction – without a defining direction, many directions are invented and directionless chaos can ensue.
  3. Building the Team – the health and culture of the ministry is connected to the health and culture of the leaders.

 SPECIAL NOTE:

Debbie Rideout, wife of Pastor Jasper Rideout at North Head, was promoted to glory on Saturday afternoon after a difficult battle with cancer. Our deep sympathy to Jasper, Sammy and the extended family.

The funeral will be at Blacks Harbour Wesleyan at 2 PM on Wednesday.

PASTORS - please note. The General Superintendent has requested that Easter attendance for every church be reported to the district office. Please email, tweet, call or send a carrier pigeon, but get the word to us next Sunday. Thanks in advance.

Great looking mission team to Cuba from Saint John First – sj1. This year has seen a record number of teams going from our district to several overseas fields. I am so pumped by the rising interest in the world beyond. Watch for high profile focus at Beulah 2014.

Caleb Richardson has accepted a staff position at Grand Harbour Central as Minister of Youth and Family Ministries.

Children’s Ministry Huddle at Fredericton Journey on Saturday – more than 100 in attendance. Excellent event.

Dunamis Youth Weekend at Yarmouth with leadership from Kingswood - more than 100 in attendance. Great variety of training, worship and community service.

Westchester hosts a monthly Country Gospel Evangelistic Outreach that is averaging 55. As a result of this, 10 new people are attending the church and 5 have accepted Christ. PTL!

For Palm Sunday yesterday, I preached in Moncton, David Smith spoke at Maple Ridge and Don Ingersoll candidated at Sussex.

Presque Isle had a mission team just return from LaGonave, Haiti where they did great work on the new hospital there. They also recently had Thabsile from Swaziland in the church for a weekend and almost $10,000 was given for World Hope’s ministry. One of the projects was raising money to place Bibles in the hands of high school students in Swaziland. Pastor Bud says, “Was wonderful to watch new families leave the Sat night service, go to an ATM downtown and return with money for Bibles.”

Havelock, NS raised more than $2600 at a desert auction last week to help youth attend the Rally in the Valley next month.  They also had a gift last Sunday of $30,000 to assist in completing the lower level of the new church.

David and Joanne LeRoy will be in Halifax this week so that he may undergo a stem cell transplant. This is a serious and significant procedure and your prayers are requested for them. Following the procedure, David will be in isolation at the hospital for two weeks or longer. Say a prayer, drop a note – and thanks for not visiting while he is in isolation.

Yesterday was a celebration of the defining moment of our faith.  Many of our churches had amazing and powerful services across the district with the consistent message – He is Risen!

Pastors, please remember to promptly provide your Easter attendance to our office as requested by our General Superintendent.

Major flooding this week in the Sussex area. A number of families from our Sussex church were impacted by flood waters in their homes with serious damage in some cases. Kingswood served as a warming location and provided care to a number of residents. David Alward, the NB Premier, visited Kingswood to express appreciation to President Gorveatte.

Speaking of Sussex, congrats to Don Ingersoll who received a near-unanimous vote at a meeting held on Tuesday evening for the Lead Pastor position at Sussex Wesleyan. He has accepted.

Debbie Rideout’s funeral was held on Wednesday at the church in Blacks Harbour. More than 40 of our ministerial tribe were present to support Jasper – a great response. Some of the guys travelled as much as 11 hours round trip to be present. So proud of deep tribal support.

I look forward to seeing many of the NS pastors this week at New Hope Valley. Will be a great day, beginning at 10 am.

We are all thankful that Dave LeRoy successfully underwent a stem cell transplant in Halifax last week. He is in hospital in isolation presently. Thanks for continuing to support the LeRoys in prayer. You may also send a card/note to him/them at 240 Rennick Road, Moncton, NB  E1G 4X9.

Pastors, you will be receiving year end memos from our office this week. Very important that you read and heed this stuff – thanks in advance.

Brazil Lake will be celebrating their 125th anniversary this coming weekend. Activities include an old time hymn sing and testimony meeting at 1 PM on Saturday with an Emmaus Road concert at 7 PM. I will be honoured to speak in the Sunday morning service and the day will wrap up with a lunch in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Amy Corey extends a welcome to all.

Lead Pastor Matt Maxwell at Fredericton Journey says “The Spirit of God has simply been electric. God is actively drawing His people to Himself!” They have recently started a new service – Fuel – designed for youth, young adults and the young at heart. In the past few weeks, 7 people have come to the Lord. PTL!

Gloria and I spent Friday and Saturday at the cottage at Beulah. The river is very high with heavy ice flows. I also met with the Browns Flat Fellowship Advisory Committee. Yesterday, we worshipped at Moncton and enjoyed the ministry of Dr. Craig Evans from Acadia Divinity School.

Another record week for IMA last week – most opens ever. Keep reading:)
